Title: Bus Pirate LCD adapter v2
Post by: ian on July 29, 2010, 04:35:59 pm
This is a new LCD adapter for the Bus Pirate. The board has been tested and Seeed is building a manufacturing prototype now. The Bus Pirate LCD library in firmware v5.4+ will require this LCD adapter instead of the old v1 adapter.

The old LCD adapter was based on a PFC8574 I2C IO expander IC. Updates were incredibly slow, and we could never get the price low enough to justify producing any.

The v2 adapter used a cheap 74HCT595 8bit output IC instead. It has an SPI interface for blazing fast screen refreshes.

Here's some general points of the design/retail package:
*Interfaces a HD44780 LCD in 4bit mode
*Power/communication indicator LED
*2x5 shourded connector (will include a cable to connect to the Bus Pirate)
*Backlight connections are brought to a header. Can be jumpered to +5/GND, or connected externally for exotic backlight drivers

Price: probably around $10, not including shipping, depends on interest

Is there any interest in this adapter board?

I would purchase this while purchasing other things from Seeed.  I probably would not create a purchase just for it, but if i'm buying other things, i would definitely throw it in my cart assuming it stays in the ~10 range.

I'd take one as I'm ordering more of your "prototypes" :)

Oh, could Seeed include a female-female changer to the big row of pins. My LCD has male pins, so it would be easier to use...

Male pins could be directly soldered to the adapter. The downside is that it isn't easy detachable.

Alternatively you could use the female-female wires from seeed: http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/1-pin- ... ?cPath=111 (http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/1-pin-dualfemale-jumper-wire-100mm-50pcs-pack-p-260.html?cPath=111)

I use those with most of my BP testings.

Thanks everyone, we'll have them up in the next week or so. There are a few other small boards we'd like to have available at the same time.

The board will ship with a female header, that way you can use a male header to adapt a LCD with female header, or attach an LCD with male header directly.

I'll be having one of those LCD boards if they're available when I'm next ordering from Seeed.

I'm confident if you report it back to seeed they resolve the issue quickly for you.

@asdf - I'm so sorry to hear that. Please contact Seeed, they will send one right away.

The cable was really important to me. It was included in the cost, and I doubled checked before they put it online to make sure they remembered it was required.

I sent an email to seeed. Let's wait what they answer. The cable is quite big plus, helps a lot if you don't have one lying around. I have headers (14-pin) and few meters of PATA cables, so for me it is not a big deal and mistakes happen.
