Title: Case for the USB IR Toy....
Post by: codefinger on May 29, 2010, 02:46:29 am
Are there any plans to make a case for this thing so all its
parts are not showing?  If not, any advice on how to find or make one?

Thanks.

There is a growing community of people building their own 3D printers.  Metrix: Create Space, here in Seattle, has at least three of these 3D printers, of two different makes.  I think I even saw a Bus Pirate case just lying around that was the result of a test print.

If you can find someone with one of these, then you can "print" your own case.  You might not be able to find anyone willing to do the design for you, so if you have skills in 3D design, you might draw up the source files yourself and submit them to the DP community.  You can use the Eagle board CAD files as a source for dimensions of the PCB, and the Bill of Materials should point you to 3D specifications for the various parts that are soldered on.

If you can come up with a 3D model that you think should work, I can probably have one printed locally. I have the USB IR Toy, so I could test the fit before shipping it to you.  Of course, you'd have to cover the costs up front, because even failed 3D prints cost money.  I think the going rate around here is $0.50 per minute, based upon the time it takes to print (materials included).

Sorry - I realize this isn't a convenient answer, nor does it make things easy.

P.S. I just realized that you could also fabricate a case with a laser cutter, using wood or plexiglass as the material. This would be a simpler 2D design, although you'd have to think in 3D to design how the parts stack up.  Some of the Bus Pirate cases are made this way, with stacking elements of plexi.  I prefer the look of the wood parts.  Metrix: Create Space has a laser cutter and charges $2 per minute, although I'm not sure whether material is included since they have varying kinds available.  Again, if you find a designer and pay for it, I'd be willing to babysit the project locally, test fit on my USB IR Toy, and ship it to you.  I'd probably make one for myself out of wood if I had the time to draw it up in 2D with Illustrator or something equivalent.  Then again, if you can find a laser cutter locally, you could do this yourself.

At any rate, if anyone comes up with 3D and/or 2D files for the USB IR Toy, please share them with the community!

Seeed Studio did a good job with the BP case, maybe they can sell a case for the IR Toy.
