Hi everyone,
It's Time to start a U.S. only box of parts. Same rules as before.
Rules:
- Take the parts out you can really can use.
- Replace them with parts you can't use (please add an equal amount of stuff)
- Send the box to the next person within a week.
- post a picture of what you got out of it and a small description what you are planning to do with
- No address information in this topic Please use the PM system for this
This will be a large flat rate priority mail box and will cost around $16 to ship.
Here's a quick look into some of the highlights in the box:
Lcd displays 16x2, VFD displays 20x2, LED display(500+ leds), stepper motors, cpld, fpga, memory, switches, connectors, and alot more. A lot of the stuff is pulls from old boards, printers, signs, radios.
Recycle and reuse is the motto.
The box will ship out on AUG the 27 Monday morning.
Who wants to be part of this chain?
Ernie
Thanks for starting this one up. I'll cross post in the other thread.
count me in!
Well looks like its just you and me. I can't wait to see what you think of or come up with to use the stuff in the box. PM me your address before Friday and I'll ship it out Monday morning Aug, 27 and I will PM you the tracking number.
Have fun
Ernie
Please, sign me up, too! (I'm in St. Louis, MO)
here is the list so far 1.sqkybeaver, 2.schazamp. Some time next week after sqkybeaver gets his box and gets his goodies out then schazamp should PM sqkybeaver his address. Hopefully we can keep this thing going all around the USA.
Ernie
i'll post it up on the blog, when it comes around.
I've got a bunch of fun stuff that I'd like to share as well - signed up on the main TGIMBOEJ page but no love thus far... Please count me in!
I would like to be a part of this.

I added all the files that I had to use to get this thing to work. I stopped using this because the oven I was using didn't get up to temp quick enough, it would take 6min to reflow.Way to long. But the board works like it is suppose to after the trace fix.
sqkybeaver,
I don't know how your going to fit all your stuff in the box. I know I didn't box the stuff as well as it could have been. And if you could let me in on how you fixed the ftdi friends. I think I removed the ftdi and re-soldered it and that took care of it. I still have 3 more laying around some where that need fixing. made a batch of 10 to give away but my reflow oven didn't do a good job of reflowing the paste. I think the 7 seg display has the wrong 7 seg cc instead of ca so it might not work I can't remember it's been a while.
the first ftdi had a short on the power(~0.2 ohm), a little solder wick and some fresh solder did the trick. the second one had a short in the usb dp and dm(probably on pcb between the pins, it worked after using sharp dmm probe to scrape between the pins)
i have not tried to put it all back in the box, i will try to find some bags and organize a little to see if i can fit it all back in. may have to leave a few items out to get it to close.
If you have to take out one or two of the big displays it's ok, they take up the most room. I had the same problem with the first ftdi I just removed it and cleaned the pads and put it back by hand and it work. So what do you plan to do with the stuff you got?
I have been wanting to build digital controlled short wave/ham receiver, the 7 seg is perfect for a simple display, and copper clad is a great base for doing some dead bug style radio.
i already have a dds chip and micro for this, just need a few mixers and filters.
Let me know what parts(part #) your looking for I might have some laying around in the junk box.
Add me to the list! Another St. Louis resident.
(keep forgetting to post after making my account)
Maybe I can hand deliver it to you, and we can split the cost of sending it to the next person.
That works fine for me.
I'll PM you when it arrives and we can make a plan to make the exchange.
I have a few Renesas Dev boards I can add to the box if anyone is interested. To be exact, I think they're the USB low power demonstrator and the RL78/RX210 development boards. I think I have 3 of each.

Anyone know where the box is? Should we track the box on a map, general area only, any ideas?
I PM'ed my address to sqkybeaver, but haven't heard whether he has had a chance to ship it yet. (This was about a week ago).
You should get it this week. Remember there is a holiday on Monday so some time between Tue-Sat.
box is on its way.
I received the box last Thursday, and have been trying to decide what to put in. I've got some misc development boards I was going to include. I've also got a bunch of samples of various:
* transistors (SMD and PTH)
* diodes (SMD and PTH)
* mosfets (mostly SMD)
* voltage regulators (SMD and PTH)
* voltage detectors
I have some reels of SMD parts, so I was gonna cut off a few lengths of those, since I'll never use them all.
Any requests? I'm going to try and arrange a meetup with Chankster next week to hand off the box.
Can you add me to the list?

Here's what I took out:

I am going to use the VFDs for a digitally controlled stereo receiver / internet radio I've been working on.
The FRAM board is something I've been interested in for a while, so I'll be messing around with that.
The graphic LCD will go into an attic temperature logger I have, and that other board (which is some kind of 595 breakout) I can use for some LEDs on another stupid test project I have going on.
Here's what I added:

* Microchip PIC24 starter kit
* Microchip F1 Evaluation board
* Basic Micro Nano28 development kit
* reel scrap of 0.1uF 0805 caps
* reel scrap of 10K 0805 resistors
* reel scrap of 0R 1206 resistors (good for jumpers)
(all scraps are labeled)
* A few SparkFun reject (though they look good to me, maybe the design was superceded?) FTDI breakout boards
* A few SARduino ATmega328 and 644 project boards (see http://www.spaceagerobotics.com/ (http://www.spaceagerobotics.com/))
* Some misc Dangerous Prototypes and Space Age Robotics stickers and cards
* A Squelette inspired mini chip amp board, a homemade PCB and a Seeed fabbed one, already assembled. I couldn't get either to work, haven't had a chance to debug it, so if you want a 2-channel LM1875T-based chip amp kit, feel free to try and get it working. If you do, please let me know! I have some more PCBs and would love a chance to make them work, it's just really low on my priority list at the moment.
There you have it. On to Chankster tomorrow.
Schazamp,
The 595 breakout board was for the vfd but it has a intermittent power switch. I'll add the datasheet for the VFD to the post.
cool to see it going and growing, keep it up!
Had a nice chat with Schazamp and received the box. I'll try to sort through it tomorrow and get it shipped midweek.
I have many things I would like to share. I would like to send them to merge with the box. I don't want to get anything out of the box. I have too much stuff now. I can start collecting stuff today.
Gus in Denver
Is there any chance I could get in on the big box of parts. I'm in Beaverton, Oregon and have a good amount of stuff I could add to it.
I'd like to join the big box list if I could. I'm in southern Virginia.

I've got all kinds of goodies here that I bet somebody could get creative with. Count me in guys!

Box is on its way to buzzdavidson!
Here's what I took:
Schazamp's mini chip amp boards
AA battery pack
FTDI Friend
Screw terminal blocks

Here's what I added:
Fiber cables
TI MSP430 USB Dev Stick
PCBs I made for a NTP based nixie clock
Key lock switch
IN-1 nixie (I have one more but I couldn't track it down)
IV-18 nixie
colored ribbon cable

I put the nixie and vfd in a smaller box with bubble wrap hoping that it survives. Sadly though, I did need to remove a LED board to make things fit. If someone wants it let me know and we can arrange shipping it.

I think we're gonna need a bigger box! Tango25, pm me your address, I'll try to get the box moving again quickly. I've got all kinds of goodies to go in the box. Chankster, do you have schematics or more details on your Nixie board? I will probably be snagging one of those. I've got a small hoard of nixies, some of which will be finding their way into the box.
Here's the eagle files for the board. Be nice since it was the first board I've ever had fabbed :D

Chankster,
What is the housing or case made of? Looks like a brick.
Concrete! Used that pink foam sheeting to make a form, chicken wire reinforcement, pvc pipe pieces to keep the openings, and a jig with wooden dowels to keep the pvc pipe holes in the right spot.
Ooh, count me in! I'm in middle-north Alabama. I'm a little low on "awesome" stuff right now, but I'm sure I can find something neat to chip in.
One thing's certain - its probably the most rugged nixie clock case I've seen!
I was thinking about getting some concrete sanding pads and polishing it down smooth. Need to look into it more since I havent ever done anything like it.
I've never seen anything like it, It must be a first. A concrete block clock, that's one of a kind for sure.

buzzdavidson,
One of those boards is a TinyProgrammer from MIT. http://http://hlt.media.mit.edu/?p=1801 The files are on thingiverse.
http://http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:12461
The smallest board is a AVR Stick . http://https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9147
And the "breadboard rgb led" is a board based on "Color Changing Night Light with ATtiny".
Once I got thses boards I realized I had made a mistake and that the pins were not spaced correctly to fit on the breadboard. But it still works if you just connect the pins on one side only. http://http://www.instructables.com/id/Color-Changing-Night-Light/

Box dropped in mail yesterday to tagno25. It's getting really full, don't be shy in taking stuff out! The LED matrix boards were really tempting but I already have too many project ideas in my backlog!

Chankster, if you want the source files for those chip amp boards, see here:
http://schazamp.wordpress.com/2011/07/0 ... roduction/ (http://schazamp.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/schamplifier-introduction/)
and here: https://github.com/schamp/Schazamp/tree ... hamplifier (https://github.com/schamp/Schazamp/tree/master/Schamplifier)
I have made some minor updates (renamed it 'Champ', etc.) but the board has not changed significantly. I'll try and post the updates soon.
I received the box Thursday. When I received the box three out of the four sides were ripping apart. I will post pictures of the box when I get home.
Time for a new box, I suppose.
Has anyone replaced it yet? I'm curious how many trips each box will withstand.
Flat rate boxes are free from the post office, it should be replaced every time. The boxes are not particularly strong though.
Wow, the post office must have played football with the box on this last trip - it was still in pretty good shape when I dropped it off. @Tagno25, did the contents arrive reasonably unscathed? Did the glass tubes make it intact?
@pib, it looks like trip count is somewhere south of 5... should probably just replace it every couple of times. Every trip seems like overkill, especially considering the relatively low value of the box contents.
@Tagno25, did the contents arrive reasonably unscathed? Did the glass tubes make it intact?
Everything looked intact. One of the SMD tapes was empty, a few pins were bent, and some small parts that were loose may have fallen out.
I will probably tape the inside of the box, to ensure no small parts escape.
As blarson said, flat-rate priority mail boxes are free, so it wouldn't cost any extra to replace the box every time...

BP-2127 VFD tube w/breakout
Bus Pirate Case
Key Switch
Both large LED arrays
Trigger Switch Cover
Here is what I added:

Bus Pirate v3.1SE PCB
Bus Pirate v4.0 PCB
3 female USB Mini connectors (I may add 2 more that fit the PCBs)
Misc SMA antenna
8 10uF 1206 Tantalum Caps
~90 0.1uF 0805 Ceramic Caps
CF to IDE adapter
Small Bag of Green LEDs
UC3-A3 Xplained
Actual Size Sticker
12v White LED Light Panel
Small Solar Panel
DEAD Sparkfun Serial Accelerometer v5 (Accelerometer may be good, but no serial)
2 Rubber Feet
2 Small Batteries
a new box might be in order, reinforcing the corners with packing tape might help some.
What do people want to find in the BBOP? I've pretty much decided on what to take out, and have a pile of stuff to add, but have more stuff that could be added if there is room. If there is some value/part number/type you want, I can look for it in mine and my dads junk boxes.
Motors, both stepper and non.
Plastic gears
Through-hole components.
Vacum tubes.
Wall warts
cables
wire
Heat sinks
Project boxes
I'd vote for:
- Through-hole components.
- vacuum tubes.
I'd vote against wall-warts. I've got big tubs of them.
I'd vote for project boxes, through-hole components (SMD also!), stepper motors.
Who's got the box and what did you take. pictures pls.
ANy update on this one? Fun to see what goes in and out.
I believe it is on its way from blarson to me. I will take/post pics and inventory on receipt and possibly have questions about some items.

The box is pretty full, I only added a little packing. Sorry I took so long, I'll mail it Monday.
BBOP arrived today - certainly very full! Box was in excellent shape. Didn't have time to sort through it - pounded 57 miles on bike on some horrible mountain roads with a guy I took my very first programming class with in '72 in HS. We biked our age! Beautiful scenery too.
FORTRAN on Hollerith cards in batch mode on an IBM 360/50 if anyone remembers such things...
Blodgar messaged me and I told him its best to just skip over me for now... I'm quite busy with work and am away from home ATM.
I will PM erict this AM to get address....
Many PCBs with static-sensitive components were loose. Used as many static-sensitive bags as I had to bag 'em. Put all ES-sensitive components in a smaller box. This added to volume, which is why I had to discard some pieces. If anyone wants/needs them, I'll ship them to you. Used a new USPS box. Shipped out Friday morning, well ahead of Sandy.

I did it a five years back with an even less-stellar (more execrable?) skill level than I currently possess. Since all the elastomer sockets for TSOP packages seem to be in the three-figure range of dollars or euros, not an inconsiderable savings. Given that the median skill level on this forum is considerably higher than mine, yours should be a far less arduous experience than mine. :) also, I know there are more sophisticated ways of doing this but I didn't know that in 2005-6 ;-}

For the blank PCBs:
I was planning on including components to build them but that would have take to much room and I didn't want them getting damaged. If you take any of the boards I put in the box, PM me and I will mail you all the need components to assemble it as well as schematic and pcb layout. The PIC24/PIC32 dev boards are designed to work with Microchips USB boot loader.
I also have a Renesas RX62N dev board that I'm no longer going to use. I would have put in into the BBOP but there is no room. Instead, I'm willing to mail it to someone that wants it.
The box has been mailed to the next person on the list today and should arrive in a couple business days. Enjoy!
Thanks for the update.
I'm really amazed at how stable and fast this box exchange has been. You guys are amazing! I worried it would 'lose momentum' after a few stops. Nicely done everyone!
This has been totally awesome to watch. A couple more hops and it's my turn. I've got all sorts of goodies here waiting to hop in the box for a ride :)

My suggestion to all members with low post count, post a lot at least once or twice a day. I have seen members with 13 post deleted by the spam filters. Spread your knowledge and help your fellow forum member out. I put myself on the bottom of the list because I'm starting to grow my collection of DP pcb's and have the need to spread the joy.
Has anybody put any thought into what happens when we reach the end of the list / define an end number? I was thinking it would be cool to send it on a second pass - that way the guys at the front of the list get an opportunity to score some of the items added by the guys near the bottom. Just an idea.... I've done a few of these types of things in other types of forums with wonderful results, and always had fun. Glad to see it happening here :)

I see at least one of the PIC 24/32 boards has been taken so I'm attaching documentation for it. The documentation isn't 100% complete but it is pretty good. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Also, the website is the documentation isn't up yet so please ignore it for now.
The board works as is with a PIC24FJ32GB004 or PIC64FJ64GB004, and will work with a PIC32MX250F128D with a couple minor modicifations (jumpers). All will work with a USB bootloader.
Here is the schematic:

My spot is getting closer. This is my first time trying this. It'll be interesting to see what's in the box. When I first jumped in I was afraid the box would be pillaged and full of junk by the time it got to me but I'm impressed by all the great stuff finding it's way into this box, and at a fast pace too!
The box made it to me today, safe and sound. I've already begun the process of digging through the goodies - it's like my birthday! Lots of really awesome stuff, very little that somebody won't find a use for. I'll snap some pics of what I'm taking / adding, and will it get it back out in the mail soon!
Josh
My pics didnt turn out great (bad lighting) but here's a list of what has been added and removed. I didn't have the heart to toss anything, but the box is super stuffed - im actually going to RE-pack it, and see if i can get things any tighter (the box is bulging!)
On a side note - if anybody attempts to build a project with the MAX9722's in here, I wanna see your soldering technique! Heck, I want to see your 'remove the device from packaging without losing it' technique :) Itty bitty stuff!
What I added
3x – DC powered industrial lamp displays (like two-digit 7 segment display on steroids)
6x – YSI 440007 Precision Thermistors
2x – PIC18F4550 Microcontrollers
3x – PIC16LF84A Microcontrollers
2x – 16 Button Keypads
2x – Globalsat TTL GPS Units and one antenna (These output NMEA, and have the SIRF chipset. PM me for a datasheet)
4x – Novatronicx 17M30B2FA 5-wire stepper motors (can somebody say DIY cnc project?)
1lb roll of solder
8x– 12x18cm perfboards
18x bare copper clad boards (I really like these, they're super heavy duty. Found them buried under some stuff @ Mendlesons a few years back)
What I removed
6 DC Relays
1 bag nylon standoffs
1 single line LCD
1 roll 3M conductive adhesive tape
1 bag of 1n4003 diodes
3 single digit nixie tubes
2 heatsink compound syringes
1n5819 diodes
78l05 regulators
1 mini adhesive breadboard
2x tl431a
SMT LEDs
a few other misc assorted SMT parts
a couple of unpopulated PCB’s
- FTDI Basic bare PCB
- Bus Pirate 4.0c bare PCB
- Schmartboard pare PCB
- Seeduino bare PCB
- 1” square atmega breakout board bare PCB
Small 2 transistor heatsink
1 assembled breadboard rgb lcd board with attiny85 on it
I only wish the flat rate boxes were bigger, lots more goodies I wish I could have added, but there's just no room. :)
One option for the overflowing box problem is to split the box. That only leaves the question of how to do it. East/West? North/South? Just split it and send the forked box to the first person on the list? I'm not saying this is the solution, just tossing out an idea.
Hello all, I just discovered this forum via a google search that lead me to a post on buzzdavidson's website. I tried adding my name to the official tgimboej wiki but I haven't heard anything thus far, so I'd like in on this.
I've got a ton of ideas floating around in my head for projects, but being poor I don't have access to parts, and hope this combined with scrapping old electronics will get me enough parts to make some of these ideas. Of course, I will post anything I make on this forum, and put parts into the box, mainly things I either cant afford parts to use (e.g. small servos) or parts I just have no idea how to use :D

I can't say I'm a fan of this, though I can't speak for all. I think a second box isn't a bad idea, but shouldn't be split from this one. Is a larger box an option? The parts I'll be adding are smaller so maybe I can find a use for some of the bigger pieces to help with space once it comes to me. Any other ideas to this issue?
Ok I think that we should split the box in two and make a box of components or anything that can be soldered to a PCB and blank PCB's. That will make lots more room in the big box. We should call it the "small box of components USA only." We'll use the "Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box" I think we'll take a vote and see what the others think. Only those opinions of the ones that received the box already and myself will be taken into consideration The rest will have to live with it.
If we decide to go for it The individual with the box at the time will have to inventory both boxes and take pictures and post the results. You will have two weeks to complete the task and then the boxes have to ship out. The small box should ship to the individual at the top of the list and the big box should continue where it left off. If you can't afford the shipping cost let me know and I'll paypal you the funds. If no one is up to the task, then when the box gets to me I'll make it happen.
Here's the list of those that can vote. Voting is open for one week 11/18/2012 - 11/25/2012.

Please a yes or no and a small comment only.

"The Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box is about the same size and shape as three stacked DVD cases, perfect for jewelry, electronics, event tickets, or other small items that need expedited shipping. And like all USPS flat rate boxes and envelopes, the new box is available free of charge. The Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box has a retail shipping price of $5.35 — one price, regardless of weight, up to 70 lbs. for U.S. addresses."
I just tried to contact tango25 But looks like his account was deleted. Look out for the spam bot!! Post as often as possible. No one is safe!
I vote yes for splitting off the components.

A larger box could be an option, but shipping costs would get more expensive and/or shipping times would get a lot slower. Priority Mail flat rate boxes give a nice balance between cost and shipping time and they're good for up to 70 pounds, so we don't have to worry about shipping cost variability due to weight. Once we go away from the flat rate boxes, shipping costs become variable based on weight.
Let's take a metrics driven approach to deciding what box to use for the 'solderable components' box.
Large Flat Rate Box - two sizes - $15.45
23-11/16" x 11-3/4" x 3" = 835 in^3 ( $0.019/in^3 )
12" x 12" x 5-1/2" = 792 in^3 ( $0.020/in^3 )
Medium Flat Rate Box - two sizes - $11.35
13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" = 546 in^3 ( $0.021/in^3 )
11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" = 514 in^3 ( $0.022/in^3 )
Small Flat Rate Box - one size - $5.35
8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8" = 73 in^3 ( $0.073/in^3 )
Having used the small flat rate box to ship items in the past, I can tell you it's pretty darn small. It's also a complete PITA with regard to the way it goes together. While a bunch of solderable components on their own might fit well in a small box, once you account for anti-static bags for sensitive components, then that volume is going to fill up right quick. Also, given the fact that it's greater than 3X the cost per cubic inch, I think that the medium box is a better choice.
I'm for the box split. I think it should go like this:
Solderable Components Box:
* SMD and PTH components
* PCBs
* Small LCDs (e.g. up to 4 x 20 line character displays)
The Large Box:
* Servos
* Power supplies
* Keypads
* Large LCDs (e.g. that 3x3" LCD you salvaged from a printer )
* Other random salvage items
* etc
Or folks can just take more stuff out of the box, but they might not end up using the items as quickly.
Also, since the box is on its way to me, I'm happy to do the split if that's what we decide to do.
Oops. I made a large comment.
I vote yes for splitting the box.
I agree with splitting the boxes. Components (relatively fragile and possibly static-sensitive) vs. "Durable Goods". I assume that switches would be split by the same method - e.g.surface-mount vs. spade-connector bat switches.
I'll abstain on the box splitting. I see both good and bad points for it, and am not currently able to participate.
For the box, small flat rate seems to small. The less well known flat-rate padded envalope seems better, cheaper and it can fit a small flat-rate box inside. Not normally found in the post-office, you can request on usps.gov to mail you some for free. For PC boards and small parts, it seems perfect.
Also, for people with paypal commercial accounts (free) you can buy the postage cheaper and with free tracking there.
splitting the box is fine with me.
Splitting the box would be OK with me.
One other idea, although I'm not sure on how to make it work in practice. Could we create a part exchange of some sort? I put a couple displays into the box when I had it and I had a few more left, so I offered them to anyone in my post. One of the other forum members took me up on the offer and than sent me in exchange some parts he had.

I understand where you are coming from on this decision but feel the last line seems unfair to those of us still waiting for the box. If it's going to be the 'live with it' approach, then I guess that's what I'll get, but I think it makes more sense to at least take the current box through those that were already in the waiting list up to the point of this discussion, or at least get input from those that are remaining on the list currently (since it will be our problem to deal with until the split). Giving the vote only to those that have already had their chance at the box, then returning a portion of the box back to those individuals doesn't make the most sense to me.
I know you said my vote doesn't count, but I feel the current box should run through those remaining on the list, then split into two boxes with independent sign-up lists. Just my two cents.

I guess that touch can split the box when it gets to him and send them in two different direction, one down the list and the other up the list or some other random method.

Personally, I vote no to splitting.
I know my opinion likely doesn't count for anything, being about the newest one here, but I think splitting the box into the groups mentioned earlier, and shuffling the list for each box would be a good idea, that way anyone who wants to get both boxes can, but not at the same time. That would make the process feel faster for anyone closer to the bottom of the list, who have been waiting already. And anyone who is uninterested in the types of items in one group can just remove their name, that way people who want that box get it sooner, and the ones who only want one of the boxes doesn't have to pay 2 flat rate shipping boxes when they only needed the one.
I know that I said that your vote doesn't count, but your two cent did. So then Please feel free to PM the rest of the individuals on the list and let them know to please give their opinions.
This is greatly appreciated you reconsidering this. I've PM'd the remaining people on the list that you noted. All were still 'active' in the member list.
Might I suggest starting two seperate threads in the event the box split wins the vote. One could be the 'Big Box of Parts USA' (the current thread) and the other, the 'Big Box of Components USA', each with it's own signup list. If the split occurs, touch would continue the parts box down the current list, but would send the component box to #1 on the component list. If the box split doesn't occur, the component thread would be abandoned.
It should also be clear in both threads what is appropriate for each of these boxes so they doen't become two of the same thing, overstuffed with a little of everything.
And above all, Thanks for getting this box started! It's an awesome opportunity for a lot of people that may not have easy access to some of the things that find their way into the box. My closest hands-on source is radio shack or frys... pfff. Both lacking most everything I'm ever looking for, and no near place to share my spares.
I don't really have a preference on whether the box is split or not.
That being said, if there are items taking up a lot of room that are cheap/easy to come by or unlikely to be desired then maybe they should be taken out before splitting the box. Determining which items fall into that category could be tough however.
I'd prefer not to split the box up just yet. There are some components I have I'd like to chip in and perhaps others I'd like to use from the box currently, as well as other larger pieces.
Perhaps what we can do is "close" the list to the 23 people on it for now hence allowing for the box to make it around as-is all the way up to user 'touch', and then 'touch' sends it back to the front of the list. At that time two lists can be started: one for components and one for larger parts.

Yes, very much so!
So far the splits have it but the don't split are catching up. Let's see what the rest of the people think, we still have time. I'm liking the comments so far, please keep them coming.

Alright, I will.
I'm ok with the split, as long as I get to be on both lists :D
Also, I have some kits I'd like to include (pcb with associated components). Which box would that go in? I guess the "components" box?
pib;
If we split then your kit will go to the "Big Box Of Components USA"
If the decision is to split, please put me on the other list as well.
I'm not sure where to vote... what is in the box now that would be split off?

I think that we should split the box in two and make a box of components or anything that can be soldered to a PCB and blank PCB's. That will make lots more room in the big box. We should call it the "small box of components USA only
Okay, I'm in favor of splitting it off.
I'd also like to be on the components box.
Didn't mention this before but please add me to the component list also (if split).
I was also going to suggest maybe the people that voted for the split donate $1.25 each via paypal gift to whoever is splitting the boxes up, since they will be paying double shipping, $15 for the big box and $15 for the components box.
Thoughts?
I hadn't voted yet, I've been mulling it over (and I currently have the box). I think that given the state of the list, I'd vote to not split, wrap up the passing of the box for the current list, and do a split upon list completion. That way people that have been waiting still get a shot at the box in its current state.
Let me know what to do, I've got the box now, and if it needs a repack and ship, I'll be happy to be the one to do it. Or I can send it on to the next guy (I have his shipping info) and he can handle it. Either way, just let me know. PS... I might sneak a few surprise additions into the box before it ships.

you missed my 'NO' but its cool :) It should be on its way to the next person tomorrow or Saturday (I ran out of packing tape, or should I say - my wife gave it to her mom to pack her moving boxes, and she didn't return it, lol).
I vote YES.
However, I think that we should wait until the box completes it's round, then split it evenly, rather than into large and small. I think that a box of pcbs and solderables alone would have a higher chance to sputter out. I also agree with touch that we should take up a collection for the splitter.

Seems more fair that way.

not republican(or democrat for that matter), just tired of the status-quot, it seems like nearly all politicians don't have any common sense(replaced by agenda). and we are looking at least 2 more years of BS. NH has a history of standing up to BS, unfortunately "live free or die" does not mean the same thing it once did :(
I could go on forever, but i'd like not to ruin my afternoon.
more on topic, when the split happens, it might help to classify the type of parts boxes. maybe one for micros + devkits + arduino type stuff. one for RF stuff, one for mechanical type stuff, etc. and not limiting a person to one list only.

Registered republican, but I feel the same. I'm a republican but at heart I think like a libertarian.
Back to the topic, So you think that we should have more than two boxes? I think we should start with a small components box and work are way up in size of boxes. ducksauz had a good idea on the box sizes and price.
Since we're now going with multiple boxes, this brings it one step further. Though I didn't vote for the original split, I'm liking the idea of the split more and more.
Perhaps as sqkybeaver suggested:
- components
- kits, microcontrollers, pcbs
- mechanical (screws, motors, raw material (aluminum plates, boxes/enclosure, etc.), etc.)
Adding this:
- parts scavenger (dead electronics, unwanted electronics, etc.)
The only caveat for the "mechanical" box would be to keep things together with other items. For instance if someone sends a Bus Pirate in the "kits" box, and has an enclosure for it, the enclosure should be included with the Bus Pirate rather than in the "mechanical" box.
It'd be great too if the boxes don't all show up at the same time. So there needs to be some randomization to the order of the lists.
If we're going to have multiple boxes then it should be on demand, keep a rolling inventory with pictures and when someone needs something in the box they ask or pm the person with the box.
Ok here is the final tally for the vote.

Whew! At least I'll get the full box before the split. After that, I would like to be placed on both lists if it's going to go around again. I probably have enough stuff to fill an entire box anyway so it may take more than once around. Thank you.
Just noticed this message, missed the initial vote. Here's my input, in any case: I'd actually vote no to splitting. People need to not be so shy - if there's something in the box that they can use, they should take it! There was also a good deal of questionable stuff taking up room in the box that could probably be safely culled out. When I got the box it had a large baggy of logic components that looked like they had been stripped from a board with a blow torch and a set of pliers. Bent pins, molten packages, etc. I should have just binned it. If in doubt, take a picture of the stuff that's of dubious use and post it to the board to see if anyone needs or wants it. Based upon the state of the box when I received it, I think we could probably remove enough cruft to make room for better stuff.
Got the box last night. Started poking through it a bit. Lots of fun stuff in there. There's a nifty A101 Dekatron tube, which I'm going to make into a clock. I'll sort through the rest of it this weekend and get it back on the road early next week.
Needed something to entertain great-nephew today, so we took a small breadboard and one of the LCD displays from the BBOP , a Parallax RFID reader and a bullduino (he thought it looked the coolest of all the candidates in the box) . We did a little research on the Arduino site, performed the assembly/test for one of the examples of both LCD display and RFID reader. I then showed him how one could merge the 44780 LCD code and Parallax RFID reader code, replacing the one duplicate pin assignment, and we tested the result. He now thinks Arduino and other DIY MCUs are *much* cooler than Lego Minsdstorm! Guess what he now wants for XMas?

Things tend to slow down during the holidays even shipping times suffer.
I gave ducksauz my address on Sunday, so hopefully it'll be here in the next few days and I'll try to get it shipped out by next Monday.

Here are the documents needed to build up the Ethernet adapter:
The hardest part to get is the Ethernet jack with the integrated magnetics. However, Digikey carries the one I used (J00-0065NL). They are not exactly cheap but work well. The microSD adaper I used (SCHD1A0101) was purchased from Mouser, but I think a different one would work too.

Once built the expansion board plugs onto the lower row of pins (pointed to by the #13 arrow on page 3 of the reference manual). The boards work well to get the microcontroller onto the web as a host and server. So far, I have only used the Microchip TCP/IP stack which, as most of us know, isn't freely distributable. If you need help, PM me and I will help you get it figured out.
Got the box yesterday and finished going through it today. Hoping to go to the post office after work tomorrow, so it should go out to drjeseuss on Thursday.

Hi all, my name is Tj. A friend and I are working on some automation kits for a planted aquarium and pretty much want to gather as much sensor information from the aquarium as possible. We have an Arduino Uno R3 and a MSP430 Launchpad and are looking to find projects to become more intimately familiar with the different things we can do with them. I personally have a number of printers and a scanner that I can disassemble and add to the boxes as well as the willingness to go out and buy something if necessary. Mostly just noobs but interested in automating everything from my lights to my aquarium and interested in becoming a part of a knowledgeable community while doing it. Willing to add some waterproofed temp sensors that we made to the bundle and will look into any requests if there are any.
That said, if we aren't found to have to little to contribute, I would like to be added to both lists.
Thanks,
TJ

Male-female serial cable (still useful with older gear I think)
large number of parts bags (not ESD-safe, for discretes, etc)
There were quite a few damaged boards and PLCC sockets (mostly due to badly bent pins) in the box as well as several bags of components (removed by blowtorch?) as previously mentioned, but I did not need to remove them for space. I'd suggest they be first to go if space becomes an issue at future stops, unless someone has a need for them of course. Also, there were several empty ESD bags, and several loose boards too big to fit in those bags. Might I suggest anyone having extra empty ESD bags, throw them in the box in case someone wants to add a populatd board but doesn't have a bag for it. Also, some ESD bubble-wrap would be helpful space permitting.
Somewhat unrelated: I ordered 50 SN74HC595s from an eBay vendor and received something that was obviously counterfeit. The product number printed on top of the chip is an odd font that I haven't seen on any TI parts before and it doesn't work like a 595. The vendor rectified the situation and sent me honest-to-goodness 595s as replacement (after apologizing profusely). My question is this: does anyone want these things, or should I just toss them?
(Even more unrelated) Counterfeiting a product worth $0.15 or so seems silly... I mean where's the profit? It's not like you can sell 100 000's of them without getting caught.
Did they look brand new, was the legs unblemished and perfectly straight? I.E not just random pulls from old pcb's?
No , they are brand new. The vendor confirmed that they are indeed mislabeled. Why would someone do this on such a cheap part? Who knows. Maybe they got ahold of a few reels of unlabeled parts and decided to mark them as 595s. According to the vendor, no part is immune from being counterfeited. I'm just happy that the seller rectified the situation.
Just a heads up to those who are watching/waiting, I messaged Sal_The_Tiller last Saturday to make sure the box arrived ok. He confirmed that it did and said he'll be posting soon.
Hey everybody, sorry it's taken me so long but I've had to deal with moving back to my dorm so things have been a little hectic. I messaged binaryguy Sunday, but I haven't gotten a response yet (the message is also in my Outbox, could that be it?). Anyway, here's my swap:
Out:

- FPGA Dev Board
- Sylvania Electron Tube
- One Wedding Widget PCB and the parts to make it (the other one is still in the box)
In:

- Propeller Quickstart
- MSP430 SMT
- 50 Red LEDs
- Small Keyswitch (not secure, you can switch it with a screwdriver)
- Hooded Swtich w/LED
- Capacitor assortment
Everything in the box was fine, I rebagged some DB25s that had cut free but everything else is okay.
Sal:
Glad to see you grabbed a WeddingWidget board. Feel free to shoot me any questions you might have. Two major things to note:
* the ICSP header is meant to be accessed from the back of the board. I'm using pogopins to program them rather than soldering on header pins.
* Pin 1 on the LED matrix is not marked. When you install the LED matrix, the printing should be on the right side when the board is facing you.
ducksauz: Thanks! I can't wait to get mine working, but I'm at school now so I can't tinker that much. What did you use for power and buttons (i.e., what part numbers)?
I still have no response from binaryguy, is anyone opposed to just moving on to SimplicityGuy?
I know I didn't put the battery holders in the bag, but there should have been a strip of 4 buttons in the bag. Check out the notes on the source photo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jccd/8277393101/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jccd/8277393101/)
If they're gone, the buttons are EVQ-Q2B02W[1] and the battery holder is SMTU1225-LF[2]. I'm using CR1225 batteries.
I've got the boards and parts for the full production run of them now and will be putting them together over the next couple of weekends. When I'm done with the assembly and know what I've got left for spares, I'd be happy to drop some in the mail for you. PM me your address and I'll mail them out when the assembly run is done.

Any rules against custom PCBs? I have a whole bunch of stuff I'd like to throw in the pot for consideration: peristatic motors, missle gyros, various solar bits, etc. I'm new to the forum - but I'd love to participate.
Not at all! I threw in a nixie board I made and there were many other project pcbs in there. If you do, make sure you have the schematic/part list handy for the new recipient.

Missle gyros? Happen to have a picture of one of yours? If nobody wants them in the box, I'd take one off your hands. ;)

Hey guys, sorry I've been a little out of touch recently. I've been busy with school and such. Anyway, I have SimplicityGuy's address and will be sending the package along early this week. I would have moved on sooner, but I thought I had sent a pm to SimplicityGuy when I actually hadn't.
ducksauz: Thanks! I'll be sure to send you something neat in return. I'll have you a PM tomorrow. Also, I think the buttons got put into the components box by mistake. I've left the box at home with my family, so can the next person sort that out?
Anyone heard from the box lately? Has it stalled?
I haven't received the box yet.
I was pretty busy this week, so the box didn't go out until yesterday. It should arrive mondayish. Sorry again for the delays!
No worries! Looking forward to getting it.
Just received the box today! Box is in good shape, though when I send it I'll get a new box since this one is getting a bit "soft".

Lots and lots of stuff! There's a box (lower left corner of the table) with just components. This alone will take an evening of going through!

Aw yeah, I'm next!
I've already got a pile of things I could put in there, I'll start collecting them into one spot :D
I'll also poll the membership of ATX Hackerspace (http://http://atxhackerspace.org) to see who has some interesting stuff to toss in there. Turns out, hackerspace members often have interesting things they don't need (our hack shelf can attest to that!).
Wow, this box has LOTS of little LCD screens of various sizes! Slowly digging my way through...
Anyone have manuals for these?

I also repacked the components and PCBs into a separate box. The box that had the components in them was falling apart.
This will go out in the mail to pib tomorrow!
@SimplicityGuy
Great pictures and good list of inventory of box, well documented.
systemstech
I got the box yesterday and did some initial digging through last night.
Tonight I take it to ATX Hackerspace where I can spread all the stuff out on a big table without fear of one of my cats diving into the middle and sending parts flying :D
I dunno, this seems like a good swap, right?

Oh, also, I think we have a heat sealer at ATXHS so I should be able to re-seal and cut off some of the antistatic bags in there, which should reduce the bulk noticeably. There are way too many bags with one tiny SMD component that are like a foot long, folded in half.
Also also, can anyone tell me what the deal is with those copper-clad boards? They are the weirdest looking ones I've seen.
pib, looks like you owe your cat a box. :)
He was definitely not happy when I forcibly removed him from that one to re-pack it :D
He gave the perfect demonstration of how I can't go through the box at home, though!
I have finished with my swaps and sent the box on to voidxar. Sorry it took so long!
Since I brought the box to ATX Hackerspace on a couple different occasions, my pictures of what went in and out got split up a little bit.
What I took out (pictures on imgur (http://http://imgur.com/a/x0fL4/all) because this forum only allows 6 attachments):
- Bag of ferrite beads (I needs these for a joule thief class I'm going to teach :D)
- Logic pulser
- OSD overlay chips and one other chip (in Microchip case, I moved the microcontrollers in there to a different case)
- CC2500 transceiver chips
- Mini SD card slots
- Chip filter beads
- A couple of tubes of thermal paste
- Some soic adapter boards and SMD headers to go with them
- Some Maxim audio-taper digital potentiometers
- Keychain digital picture frame (it has an SPI-controllable LCD in it!)
- Genie universal garage door opener remotes (I happen to have an intellicode opener and my remotes are broken)
- Weird bar-mount button
- Some slide pots
- One of the 2 ATtiny85 USB boards
- Some round and not-round proto boards
- Some panel-mount IEC sockets
- Tiny SSD (128MB?)
- The proto-squares (wanted the arduino pro, but it seemed weird to split the squares up)
- The remaining wedding blinky kit (though looks like somebody took the buttons that were supposed to be in there, oh well, I've got some SMD buttons I can sub in)
- Breadboard jumpers
- Some op-amps and 555 timers
- Some bi-color LEDs
- Some diodes
- The ChipKit Max32
I also tossed out the CD case that went with the MSP430 eZ430 USB dongle thingy because it was taking up too much space in the box. The USB stick is rolled up in the quickstart guide that was inside the case with it.
Stuff added (pictures on imgur (http://http://imgur.com/a/yJYL3/all), again):
- ATX Hackerspace blinkenbat learn-to-solder kits (designed by yours truly :D)
- Wee Blinky kits by Dale Wheat
- USB ethernet adapter
- RC helicopter joystick (returns to center in one direction, stays where you put it in the other)
- GlideTV Navigator touch-pad parts (PM me for more info if you take one of these and need help talking to it, or if somebody else wants one)
- LeafLabs Maple
- Some various *very bright* LEDs
- Some DIP ATmega328s
- A zigbee board and breakout board for it
- Various Multi-pole-single-throw switches
- Some 7-segment displays and sockets
- Some colorful buttons
- Some NES switch assemblies (easily modified to both be momentary, for use as a PC power and reset switch)
- Some SMD buttons
- Some SMD mini-USB jacks
- FTDI USB-serial breakout board
- Some random inductors
- Some various TI multi-channel LED PWM controllers, I2C and maybe some SPI
- A handfull of 200mAh LiPo cells (don't worry, they have overcharge, overdischarge, and short-circuit protection built-in!)
- Some other sparkfun breakout board, but I took the picture of the wrong side so I don't remember what it is :P
- "PCB Fab-in-a-Box foil. Not really sure, someone else contributed this
- 2 graphical LCDs with onboard controllers and EL backlights (no inverter for the backlight on board, though)
- Temperature sensor board from an old macbook
Anyone know where the box is?
I sent it to voidxar. Haven't heard anything since that.
Any chance I'm on the list? I'd love to contribute!
Any news on the location of the box? It would be a shame to see it lost so close to going full circle.

But at this point it seems as though the box has vanished...
I've emailed voidxar to ask again what the status is. It's possible he hasn't been getting notifications from replies or PMs.
Was there tracking on the package to see if it's been delivered?
I got a message back from voidxar last week. He has had the box for a couple of weeks. Life circumstances had been preventing him from checking on here, so he hadn't been online for a couple of weeks.
I emailed heathkid and asked him to email voidxar with his name/address information 3 days ago. I haven't heard back from him. I just sent him a PM in case that email went missing.
Thanks pib for the info.
I received the box today. It's certainly going to take me a few days to go through it (it's packed FULL).
Update:
Okay, there is some serious "garbage" in here. Yes, I know one person's junk is another's treasure... but I'm talking stuff no one would EVER use... and it's taking up precious space in the box. I've been sorting things into "samples", LCDs (not as many or any useful that I can see), and various other parts into seperate bags. I'm afraid I can't use (take out) enough to put IN what I wanted to because the box has so much (sorry to say...) junk in it by now.
Anyone against me "sorting the real junk out" to make some room??? Also, there is no way to do a complete inventory at this point. Seriously... a bag of empty bags and anti-static bags thrown in with nothing in them?
So far I see some LEDs I like and some SMT parts... but not really worth the shipping cost let alone what I had planned to toss in. I'm a bit disappointed. But, *IF* I can make some room in the box I will be sending forward some good things regardless.
One more stop to touch, then it's back to systemstech when the box is being split down to the components box and parts box. That should alleviate a lot of the over stuffing issue (for now). Also, I just noticed I haven't rejoined this list...

This is a nightmare! Sorry it's taking so long. I'm going to have to go one more weekend sorting things so I can fit *anything* in this box. voidxar... I have no clue how you managed to get the box closed! Anyway... I plan on moving it along next week so if "touch" would please PM me your shipping address so I can get things ready I'd appreciate it. Also, if there is anything specific you're looking for... let me know.
drjeseuss if you're going to do the "split" I highly recommend you put yourself in at #24 since you'll be covering for systemstech. This should have been split up a while ago I'm guessing by the amount of parts, components, and junk... there is absolutely no way to do a complete inventory at this point. I'm not even going to try. I'm only going to take out enough that I can fit in some "real good stuff" for the next on the list and get it on its way. I've already sorted a LOT of things into bags so it makes some sense. Oh well... maybe next time around I'll get enough out to at least cover the shipping costs.
drjeseuss if you're going to do the "split" I highly recommend you put yourself in at #24 since you'll be covering for systemstech.
This is already done, though not reflected by the list directly. touch knows to send to me after his turn and has my shipping info already. The list continues to grow and grow, still showing the very first stop. Might I suggest we start trimming the list so the #1 spot is always whoever is next in line, then counting down the list from there. We can always browse back through the thread to trach history if needed. Anyone object to this? If not, I'll rewrite the list to count from my turn down, eliminating the spots already visited.
touch, please PM me your address... I can't seem to contact you. Thanks.

Hi heathkid;
If touch does not respond by the end of the week keep the box moving send it to drjeseuss so that the split can take place. touch can always be added back to the list if and when he comes back.

Just an update, I PMd heathkid last Thursday to see if he's shipped the box yet. The PM is still unread. Hopefully this box will get going again soon.
I would like to be added to the list. I don't I'm assuming this is it. I've got a lot of spare parts I'm not using.

Hey all, I just noticed I'm missing from the lists. I've been silently following this thread once every couple weeks but I still exist! Life gets in the way of me making any substantial posts (or any projects with on hand stuff, no time for component shopping) though : (

Did anybody plot a route on google maps to see how many kilometers (miles) the box went across the continent? Would be a funny thing to see.
heathkid had the box last and was awaiting contact with touch. Failing that, he was asked to ship the box to me for the split. He got that request but didn't reply. He also hasn't responded to my email attempts. In any case, once I received the box I was to split it to components and parts. With this recent event, I assume the best approach would be to start a component box under it's thread (http://http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4843), and a new parts box, continuing the list from it's last position. If anyone can start a component box (no 'parts' in this one), you should volunteer in it's thread so we don't get several started at once by mistake. For the parts box (no 'components' in this one), it should continue on the existing list noted below once someone volunteers to start one out. Here is the current list:

As reminder, components are ICs, resistors, capacitors, tubes, LEDS, etc. Parts are PCBs, kits, demo boards, programmers, solder, gears, motors, etc. See the respective threads for discussion of box size to be used for each of these packages.
Did anybody plot a route on google maps to see how many kilometers (miles) the box went across the continent? Would be a funny thing to see.
As the box traveled "anonymously", each person only knew where it came from, then where it went next. The locations were never disclosed for privacy. Going forward, I'd propose that each recipient disclose their zipcode or nearest major city for a very generalized tracking of the packages. Anyone agree or object to this idea?

We could also post tracking links, they don't reveal the address of the recipient.
I'm still in, I have more stuff than I need so can easily add more than I take.

Using a zipcode as tracker would certainly be enough to get a path established. This thread has been going for so long that it must be reaching the moon by now (or at least feeling its gravity-field).
If it is possible, then the box can be tracked from the start. That is, if all agree that disclosing an approximate zipcode if fine. The start of the travel needs to be traced in the right order, if possible.

If anyone can start a component box (no 'parts' in this one), you should volunteer in it's thread so we don't get several started at once by mistake. For the parts box (no 'components' in this one), it should continue on the existing list noted below once someone volunteers to start one out. Here is the current list:
1. cm0n3y34
2. systemstech
3. sqkybeaver
4. buzzdavidson
5. Tejeev
6. TomKeddie
7. rwinscot
8. hololight
9. DrJeseuss
10. Chankster
--. heathkid
11. geekygeek2
i would like to be add to this list too i have things to make.
Sorry this is long dead, the box went missing.
