Hi there,
I'm interested in purchasing a BusPirate. The information one can get about v4 of the device is a bit old:
dangerousprototypes . com / docs / Bus_Pirate_v4 says it is in "Test production" (as of 2011-09-17)
dangerousprototypes . com / docs / Dangerous_Prototypes_Projects_In_Development says it is "In initial production" (not changed since February)
dangerousprototypes . com / docs / Bus_Pirate_v4 says that "developer hardware is available for $50", but the price at the shop (www . seeedstudio . com / depot / bus-pirate-v4-for-developers-p-740.html ? cPath=174) is at $37.15
So my question is: What is the current status? Can I "safely" buy a v4 or might the hardware change in the future?
The circuit itself won't change. The PCB shape/size will change eventually to fit a case. I still recommend the v3 though, and it's 10 bucks cheaper :)
I made some updates on a few of those pages, sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for the updates of the pages.
As the curcuits won't change, I'll go for it :) And the 10 bucks ain't that much difference.
Any idea when the SoB version (and hopefully case) for the BPv4 will be available? I'm considering whether or not I should order a BPv4 now or wait for the cased version.
Well... I was putting the hardware into production, but the clearance on the header for the case is really super tight. It's not clear to me if it will work. We may have to bump up to a bigger board :(
Hi Ian,
Please post a update on the current status of Bus Pirate V4
Bus Pirate v4 is back in stock at Seeed Studio. The Bus Pirate is an open source hacker multi-tool that talks to electronic stuff.
us Pirate v4 is new and shiny, but it will lag behind the trusty v3 for a while. If you want proven goodness we still recommend the v3,
Is the Bus Pirate 4 firmware dead ?
Hi,
I am thinking of buying the Bus Pirate 4 (when it comes back in stock), but I am somewhat hesitant because I can't seem to find anything dated after Jan 2011.
If it is more advanced than that, please can someone post a link ?
Also, when I buy the BP4, does it come with the latest firmware ready installed ?
Regards,
Paul

The development of the firmware for BP has kind of stoped. If you are not a developer I recommed you buy the BPv3. The BPv4 is stable, almost everthing work it can't be used as STK500. Since the BPv3 works it does not make sense for any one to work on a firmware for BPv4 unless they want to add additional features for their requirements.
The BPv4 does not come with the latest firmware but you can easily update it. I belive the latest firmware is Bus Pirate v4
Firmware v6.3-beta1 r2151

Thank you for the clarification.
