Title: Laser cut BusPirate V4.0 enclosure
Post by: wvdv2002 on May 08, 2012, 10:45:30 pm
I designed a laser cut enclosure for the BusPirate V4.0. My version uses 2 mm thick acrylic sheet.

I used this (http://http://dangerousprototypes.com/2012/03/20/bus-pirate-v3-laser-cut-acrylic-case/) design as a reference and modified the dimensions to fit a Bus Pirate V4. Added some holes for the two buttons as well.

After laser cutting I discovered that the leds are right on the edge of the PCB and interfere with the side wall of the second lasercut layer...
I filed the edge it to an angle of 45 degrees on that side and filed a little bit away for R8 as well. Then it all fitted together quite nicely. After discovering that a M3 screw could be screwed tightly into the PCB holes to fixate three layers I used some thin double sided tape to stick the back layer to the PCB, so there are no screws with bolts sticking out on the underside.

Afterwards I created a sticker from the pinout from the underside of the PCB, I had to rearrange the texts for the pins to come out alright. I did not have any sticker paper, so I printed it on normal paper and used some sticky tape to stick it to the case.

Files:
I made a small zip file with the following files in it:
A casing with the sidewall on top of the leds.
A casing with the sidewall of the layer on top of the PCB to the side between the leds and the voltage regulators (NOT TESTED YET!)

An SVG version of the PCB (For checking if the enclosure is the right dimension in Inkscape).
The old bus pirate V3 enclosure
The BRD file with only the pinout text from the underside for creating a sticker
The pdf version of the sticker with the text facing you if the USB port is facing to the right.
The SVG version of the sticker with the text facing you if the USB port is facing to the right.

The reason the USB port is facing to the right is because the computer is on the right side of my bench :)

Important:
If somebody else uses these files to print their own enclosure, please post a picture! Watch out though, this casing is for PCB version 4.0. I saw in the SVN there is also a version 4.0A and 4.0B, they might be different.

Thanks for sharing, this is a very cool case.

All current Bus Pirate v4 should fit, but there will indeed be switch to v4c with a different shape soon. It addresses the 'LEDs too close to the edge' problem you mention.
