I had a little fun with a stepper motor this week. Thought I'd share it here... these things are pretty cool to experiment with as generators. If you get inspired, share your experiment in the Hack A Week thread.
Hack A Week # 43, Stepper Motors As Generators:

...oh, and share it here too! :)
thanks for sharing with us!
Awesome awesome awesome video!
if I may suggest though, for the video, try to get yourself a mic so that faint echo goes away, and put in a slight transition between the logo and the footage, the transition makes it more "fluid" I guess. :P
I have been playing around with a stepper motor lately, also from a printer, and they are seriously strong! Granted, they pull like 20 watts, but I never witnessed such a strong small motor! I never even through about using them as generators though.
anything with a permanent magnet will make an alternator. it is fun to try to see what common items can produce current.
Thanks for the comments!
hak8or, I intentionally did a direct cut from the intro snipe this time. I used a few fade to whites as well. Just wanted to mix it up a little on this one. :) I may do a lapel mic at some point... I kind of like the feel of the room in the audio though.
The zombie Apocalypse touch towards the end of the video is pretty cool. :P
And yeah, I see the short fades now. I did notice though that the tags for your video seem to not be that broad. I personally include stuff like hack, hacker, *name of show*, volts, current, amps, oscilloscope, analog, funny, hobbyist, tinker, tinkerer, hobby, things like that. "Stepper motor" vs "stepper" "motor" are different, so I suggest you put the words together and separately too. Makes you show up more in youtube searches which gives you more views and a larger possible audience.
All in all, really good. :)
Edit: your cats name is Jfet !? Even cooler. :P
