Title: My christmas order arrives
Post by: arupbsk on January 05, 2012, 04:49:00 pm
In the christmas week, I placed an order in element14 (aka farnell/newark).
In the component tester project log, I've faced the problem of non-availability of any P channel MOSFET in my locality. viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3260&start=135#p32808 (http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=3260&start=135#p32808)
Then I waited for some days for christmas and arranged enough money to order some useful things from erlement14. Due to the holiday season, my order placed on 28'th December came delivered today, 5'th January. (Their usual timearound is 3-5 days).
Here's the items(junks?) I've ordered.
[attachment=3]
I've ordered,
a lots of SMD resistors and capacitors for which I selected values that are common.
some 32.768000KHZ crystal for super-accurate RTC clocking.
MOSFETs: BSS84 P-ch and 2N7002P N-ch
some SMD LED
DURATOOL D00012 MINI DRILL KIT
[attachment=2]
DURATOOL D00269 CLAMP TOOL, WITH MAGNIFIER
[attachment=1]
ARTESYN NLP40-7629J SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY 71K8944
[attachment=0]

Well, the tools are of super quality.
The drill comes with adjustable speed, and with 4 collets, 60 accessories, plastic+alluminium carry case, etc at only around 30 USD. The helper hand comes with nice clear lens I've ever seen and has great magnification without distortion. The last item I that is a industrial grade PSU, that's actually priced near 60 USD . That is not for me but bought as a gift for someone.

Tip, that 3rd hand with magnifying glass is useless unless you screw it down to your table top, I had the exact same one, as soon as you touch a board placed in t with a soldering iron it falls over....Needles to say mine ended up being tossed from the window...

Nice box of parts! Enjoy the SMD parts. Have you considered a cheap R and C kit from ebay to fill in the not-so-common values? I want to try to get a bunch of these for blog giveaways, and a thank you gift to people who contribute on the blog :)

I got something like this in the past:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Val ... 256afbbe11 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Value-Resistor-32-Value-Capacitor-Kit-1-/160708673041?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item256afbbe11)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Val ... 35b5f2ca9b (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Value-Resistor-32-Value-Capacitor-Kit-N-/230685854363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b5f2ca9b)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Val ... 255c284fa2 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-0805-50-Value-Resistor-32-Value-Capacitor-Kit-/160459935650?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255c284fa2)

50R and 32C for around $10. Not perfect, but does save a lot of hassle.

lol, I didn't know that was the trick :D I also have one and find it useless, don't know how people use them.

double sided tape :) I use the "universal" one from TESA, works like a charm, you tape the base of it to the table and you can use it then. It's not as good as the vice but works

Ahhh... So I'm not the only one who had problems with their 3rd hands. Here's my fix:

Heh, nice discussion on the third hand uses, also chr, how on earth !? :P
Did you get the weights they use in weight training and somehow .... oh wait. You just put the third hand through the hole of the weight, didn't you? I sat here thinking you you made a third hand from one huge piece of metal, heh.

Anyways! How much did you pay for shipping for your order? I had a bad transaction with newark and tend to avoid them from now on. They did not give me the shipping price when I ordered, then charged me around fifteen dollars to ship when it should have been far far less (Three DIP-40 ic's). Even worse, when I purchased the items it said that there were hundreds in stock, but they did not ship my order for an entire week! I must say though, they package the items really nicely, and sometimes they do have very good "clearance" prices like an entire reel of red SMD leds for only 7.50 USD. Their re seller rating is pretty bad too, no surprise there.

@hak8or,
In my country, the local newark office (aka element14 India) is one of the best service providers.
http://in.element14.com/ (http://in.element14.com/)
 At the time of placing order through web, I have two shipping options as standard(3-7days) at 200INR (4USD) and express(next business day after importing) at 500INR (10USD) flat shipping for any size order and free shipping for orders over 7000(140USD). The hidden part is that the tax is calculated by them and charged extra. For tools, and most parts the tax rate is 14%, for IT products the tax rate is 5%, and in rare items the tax is 4%. When I order with them, they bring items to their india office by UPS from UK/SG/CHN/etc in 2-3 days and they do all processes as customs clearance, etc. After that they send me email asking for sales tax waybill or a written letter for my state/provience regulations they have to send it with courier. Then it takes another 2-3 days to reach me. The 5 days time is fine for me in the 4USD shipping, only this time they took 7 days because of holiday season.

Oh wow, you are so lucky that they worked so well for you! Also, that is weird that they show shipping prices up front in India but in the USA they bill you later.

Either way, congrats on your new stuff, tell us how the hand drill holds up! :P

Element 14 in Oz has free next day shipping when ordering from their web site. With a $10 minimum order, their cost of shipping can exceed what I pay for the 4 or 5 parts I order when some parts need to first be shipped from Singapore/UK/USA as they send them as soon as they become available in separate express post packages. Makes no $en$e <shrug>.

a few more shots to add to the 3rd hand kludge collection:
For most PCB's
[attachment=1]

and the heavier stuff just gets a few more plates:)
[attachment=0]

I also have a pana-vice, but sadly it doesn't get too much use - mainly because the suction cup doesn't stick to the anti-static mat for long. . .

arupbsk - looks like a Christmas to star the new year off right!

chr - i like your solution the best;-)

Thanks bearmos ;)
Is this heat shrink tubing on both jaws of the alligator clips to keep them from scratching the pcbs?

mainly to keep from marring the insulation on wires too much. the teeth on the clips bite into it really far after it's heated up. . .only really necessary if you do a bit of wire-to-wire soldering though (not necessary for PCB population).

Well, I got my new year order today. I ordered it about 1 week ago as I was still trying to find all the components in the partslist for Robert. It was a pretty big shipment as it contained parts for Cygni, Robert, accelerometer breakout board (which I got from free pcb drawer about a year ago!) and a couple more projects. Here is the picture of the box:
[attachment=2]
Actually this is the sorted contents, the beaglebone was inside the transparent plastic bag (which houses Cygni's parts now) as I had to sort out components my friends asked from me to order. I was pretty happy as this was my biggest order to day!

As I finally had my accelerometer, I've decided to solder it up using electric skillet method. I thought I had the required tantalum caps so I didn't order but it turns out I have a different value. I soldered it anyways with the 0805 caps, tested the connection with a multimeter for shorts and used my BP to verify that it is working. It works without the tantalum caps, but I don't think that I'll be able to get good readings so I'll get some locally (aka Akihabara). BTW, here is the result:
[attachment=1]

And the grand finale of my order: The beaglebone. I was following this for a while and I really enjoyed doing development with Gumstix computers. It is cheap if you consider the parts on the board but lacks a video output. The HDMI "cape" will be available soon, also there is an LCD "cape" in the works. I was really busy today so I was not able to play around with it, but I'll play around with it soon and write sth up. Until then here is a pic to tease you all. :D

Today I got a nice backpack from element14 as a new year gift for my order placed in Christmas week. I was expecting some kind of calendar/diaries/pens but they sent me this nice laptop bag.

What did your part suppliers (digikey, mouser,etc) sent you ?

I've ordered from element14 the Australian version a few times. great because they have free courier shipping to Australia from the Australian site. however they charge an average of %20-40 markup on prices compared to digi-key/mouser. Since digi-key charge a flat rate of $30 for all orders <$200 to Australia elemnt14 is cheaper for individual parts.

One interesting thing about element14 Australia is how they package and ship parts. my last order had 19 lines, mostly one off parts. they shipped them in 5 different parcels that arrived over the course of about 2 weeks. A few before Christmas and a few after new years.
I thought it might be because they shipped directly from overseas warehouses. But all the origin addresses were from the same place.

Related: I bought one of those 3rd hand tools, the joints ended up rusting up so I had to toss it out. Not sure if it's because mine was cheap or if I'd spilt something on it at some point.

Wow, score Arup.

Nice work on the LGA chip Tayken, have you tried anything else with the skillet method?

I soldered the same DFN and QFN PIC microcontrollers Sjaak soldered. Actually used the skillet for the whole board, turned out really good. Pics attached.

I don't have a syringe suitable for paste so I use a toothpick for putting the paste, so I usually end up with too much paste (made a crude one for accelerometer but I had the same problem). I push down on the IC with my tweezers, which squeezes out the excess solder. Might cause shorts but checked all pins with multimeter and turned out they are all fine. One of the best (and cheap) investments I've made. :D

The table! :D Hehehe, I meant the skillet, second hand, ~15$ the cheapest I could find. It doesn't even have temperature control (which is in the works actually).

Nice backpack.

I got this Ben Heck T-shirt from E14 (too bad it’s XL and I wear S).

But, despite having received this I’m still mad at E14 and will never buy from them anymore.

A few months ago I took part in an Element14 design contest that consisted in using the E14/Freescale XL_STAR Board to do a design. I ended up being a runner up and the Runners up prize included a discount Boucher for £250 on my local Element14 store, pretty sweet I thought. Unfortunately, my country didn’t have a local E14 store so I got my E14 coupon set up on Newark USA.

The big surprise came when I was told that my £250 discount coupon somehow became a 15% discount coupon. So, to get any value out of it I would have to spend at least $1500. Therefore, it’s totally useless for me since I rarely spend more than $50 a month on electronic components.

So I won’t buy from Newark anymore and won’t take part of any Element14 contest again (at least not one that requires some time/effort).
