Title: Built my CPLD breakout board
Post by: Segfault on May 12, 2011, 09:03:26 pm
I was able to put my dev board together and it seems to work.  I am attaching the pic of my build.  I picked up a book on VHLD and hopefully I'll get rolling with this.

Nice build, thanks for posting. Another Free PCB code is on the way :)

Congrats on the build, Segfault!

You might wan to take a look at U1's row close to C3 and make sure the pins are making full contact with the pads and have nice fillets (you can poke at them with a dental pick gently and see if they move, ideally they won't).  It's a bit hard to see the fillets from the photo.

Note, this is merely a friendly suggestion:)!

Thanks for the tip.  I did as you suggested and found one pin that wasn't making good contact.  I'll have to touch it up later.  I did this without flux (never again) and remember having a solder bridge that I had to clean up there.  I guess I took a little too much away.

Excellent,  I'm glad that helped.  I know if it were me, that one pin would have caused an intermittent issue, causing hours of frustration and troubleshooting :).  I'd wind up combing through code and schematics for quite a while before finding it.

Also, there's a flux discussion over here (http://http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2302&p=21871&hilit=Things+that+disappoint+me#p21867)

Something I've found really helpful in controlling the amount of solder on the joints is a nice thin solder, .015" diameter or less; it's amazing how much easier it is to use.  I found a small quantity at a local Radio Shack a while back, but you can also get it at any online store, like mouser (http://http://www.mouser.com/Tools-Supplies/Solder-Fluxes-Accessories/_/N-wp6hZscv7?P=1z0jnibZ1z0jntf&Keyword=solder&FS=True)
