Project development, ideas, and suggestions / Re: Idea for FPGA trainer "deluxe"
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cyclone-NIOS-II ... 3a7c56be49
It has a Altera cyclone II FPGA (avaiable in solderable packages) and contains a USBblaster to program them.
Features are fun, SDRAM, SRAM, Flash, 16*2 LCD, PS2, VGA, IR for remote, SD card, some 7 segments, LED's and buttons.
They got quite some VHDL and Verilog examples on the CD and schematics and stuff too.
Some with chinese comment but hey ;)
Also included are some examples for the softcore CPU NIOS from Altera.
Kinda hard to beat for 80 dollars :)

Sick of Beige / Re: I also made a casing :) (custom 5031)
Fun fact, as the CMSIS-DAP is a very new design there is no support for open source toolchains at the moment.
If there are people that have experience with that kind of stuff we offer to send you a free CMSIS-DAP board and the documentation so you can give it a go.
All the info + schematics and PCB design can be found here:

Sick of Beige / Re: I also made a casing :) (custom 5031)
That and a basic Sketchup tutorial and even a beginner can design a simple case

Sick of Beige / I also made a casing :) (custom 5031)
I also made a small casing for my PCB, first time ever I used Sketchup, think it came out alright :)
Here are some pics:
Project is still busy, it will be a CMSIS-DAP ARM debugger, will post something about it on http://www.simplecortex.com in a week when all tests are done :)
Sneak peek for you guys ;)

Project logs / Four or more layer PCB design for beginners using EAGLE
I made this report for my internship, it has some basic tips on how to use Eagle for 4+ layer PCB and some tips in general.
I think it can be useful even if you don't use Eagle, so why not share it ;)
You can find it here:

Comments are welcome.

General discussion / Murata has some inductor/capacitor lessons
When looking for a small switching power supply module at the website of Murata I found this:
http://www.murata.com/products/emicon_fun/index.html
They have some lessons about how capacitors and inductors work.
Of course, as they make caps and coils it's a bit self promotion but the lessons look quite useful.
Caps: http://www.murata.com/products/emicon_f ... index.html
Coils: http://www.murata.com/products/emicon_f ... index.html
I guessed, why not share it :)

General discussion / Re: Big Box of Parts
Box is indeed at my place till tomorrow.
It will go to Jawi next.
This is what I took out:
http://http://www.brc-electronics.nl/Fotos/Random/DSC02351.JPG
And what I put in:
http://http://www.brc-electronics.nl/Fotos/Random/DSC02347.JPG
http://http://www.brc-electronics.nl/Fotos/Random/DSC02348.JPG
Lets see:
About 10 PIC's, some 16F, some 24H and a DSPic.
Some Atmega328's with Arduino 0022 bootloader.
Some LPC1113 ARM Cortex M3 devices from NXP (Can be programmer with flashmagic via a serial port if you like that)
A CPLD breakoutboard, uses a Altera Max V CPLD, don't have the schematic anymore :(
Some PCB's for a 78XX power supply
2 Simplecortex PCB's, old revision(0.5), eagle files can be found here: http://www.brc-electronics.nl/hardwar
2 SMD sockets, don't know for what package, looks big :)
2 1200V 150A IGBT's, for some sick coilgun perhaps?
Some cheap LED strips.
And as nixie tubes are something most people here like I threw in some other old parts, 2 radiotubes, both triodes.
A 56 tube and a 227 tube, both really old stuff, the 227 tube is from 1930s, 56 tube around WWII, 1940's I guess.
Datasheets can be found here: http://frank.pocnet.net/index.html

Project development, ideas, and suggestions / Re: mp3 player - mp3 decoder chip
No problems with 320KBps MP3, works perfect.
Get a VS1053 dev board on ebay for 12 dollars and give it a try :)

Can do MP3, WMA, WAV and much more.

General discussion / Solder paste stencil from Iteadstudio
For making the Simplecortex beta boards we decided to use a Solder stencil from Itead.
They cost 45 dollars but it saved us 20 minutes per board applying solder paste.
And at 10 boards that adds up...
Here some photo's (last photo is a bit messy, was to lazy to clean it :) )

Project development, ideas, and suggestions / Re: Simplecortex, a ARM Cortex dev board
The LPC1788 should be able to run it.
But when using linux the realtime idea is gone, switching IO, reading ADC etc is a lot slower then, simply because there is an operating system avaiable.
The Simplecortex can run CoOS, a tiny realtime OS made by CooCox.
But again, think of it as a fast arduino with debugging and a nice eclipse based IDE (but then simple and easy to use, making a new project is really easy)
Debugging is really really helpful, placing breakpoints and pausing code works wonders on bug finding :D

Project development, ideas, and suggestions / Re: Simplecortex, a ARM Cortex dev board
The beaglebone or raspberry pi run linux, the Simplecortex is bare metal just like the arduino.
But the Simplecortex has more flash, ram and peripherals then the arduino.
The higher clockspeed and the fact that it's a 32 bit microcontroller make it possible to use a color lcd without problems.
I made a test program that hosts a website, uses the microsd, showed stuff on the LCD and more, still not close to max of the Simplecortex.
But the fact that you don't have to worry about speed and code size is quite nice :)
The onboard debugger also is wonderful, it makes programming so much easier.
The debugger can program almost all ARM devices from NXP, ST, TI and some other manufacturers.
No more bootloaders and stuff :)
