Tools of the trade / Re: Cheap Solder Paste
I like the logic of buying the paste that actually gives the metal content - I went ahead and bought some of the Mechanics - thanks guys!

I bought some 63/37 thin solder from ebay awhile ago - it certainly wasn't anything close to 63/37 - it pretty much turned into plastic smelling paste when melted - so its good to hear the Mechanics stuff actually might be solder...

The manufacturer claim "Current Control Mode 0-3A adjustable" but I really don't think so. I see no knobs or switches for setting cv/cc mode as on the more expensive version.  Maybe one of each can come in handy. :-)
It looks like there's a button on the bottom - this might make select between CC/CV modes.

Nah, I found a clear picture of it. It's only CV. The left button is the power button, and the right is just a placeholder/blank for the output terminals of the bigger brother of this power supply.  But for $29 I'm ok without a adjustable current limiter.

Good catch! I honestly threw it in on my order and didn't look twice because of the price and it didn't add to shipping.

I just asked them if I could switch to this one and pay the difference: http://smart-prototyping.com/index.php? ... uct_id=105

They sent me an email that the oven I ordered was OOS until after the new year - I responded that I'll happily wait, gives me confidence to hear from them. They even asked if I wanted to switch to one of the other ovens in the email - so far service looks good!

That would kill me to run Digisparks on such small equipment - right now they get run on multiple full size pick and place machines at the factory. But this is for making some pre-assembled SMT shields as well as prototyping new products, I'm tired of soldering 0402s by hand.

The next prototype board I need I'm going to give these folks a try - that is of course if they ship my oven in the mean time.

Tools of the trade / Cheap Solder Paste
I'm not sure if this should be here or in General Discussion - but this seems like it might be the right place...

What do folks use for cheap solder paste - not $50 Kester syringes -I use Kester a lot but I'm looking for something to use on cheap prototypes and the like with the reflow oven I have on the way.

Like something like this:

Any opinions? Favorites? Good sources? etc?

While I haven't tested their PCB service yet - I just made the plunge for a big test of their store:

Reflow Oven AT-R1825 $299.99
DC Power Supply LW PS-1503D (0-15V/0-3A) $29.99
SMD Book R0402 $19.99
Multimeter Victor VC830L (U,I,R) $7.99 (can never have too many of these!)
Sub-Total:   $357.96
Express: 3-8 days, with tracking & insurance, dimensional weight (21.85kg):   $103.25
Total:   $461.21

I'll post an update when I get it - ordered last night, got a confirmation, but nothing else yet - of course it is now nearly the weekend there.

Tools of the trade / Re: High speed Pick & Place for $3600
Zack's blog is also where I first became aware of these machines - then I looked at them on taobao and they've never left my mind since. More than anything I like that they look like something I could A) Hack and B) Fix
Seeed is going to the factory on Monday and I have committed to buy one.
As DwayneR said - is there any chance you'll let others jump in on the group buy? I sent a message via the contact form too - long time reader, never have spare time to be a poster, but trying to do that more too. I run digistump (website at that address plus the usual ending) - makers of the attiny85 development board the Digispark - I've been through evaluating every type of pick and place, new, used, american, chinese, large, small, etc - almost bought a Quad 4C (which the guys at solarbotics just bought) but decided to delay it due to time/space/power constraints. These seem perfect! and by that I mean perfectly hackable! It would be awesome to create a community around them!

Let me know if you'll let people join in, since I'm new here I'd be happy pay up front or something like that. I'm in Washougal, WA (Portland, OR area) and would need it shipped here, but any shipping arrangement would work for me (ie. shipped to the states then to me, or shipped right to me - I'm good at being patient). I would want one machine and I could also provide payment in any form and would want whatever spares/accessories others deemed necessary.

Regardless thanks for all the great investigation of these - thanks to xinort too of course for all the first hand info!
