Another issue that has been resolved is the bandgap preservation and reprogramming for chips like the 12F675 (bug in the old GUI programs overwrote the bandgap and it could not be restored easily).

I recently discovered the PICkit2Plus and PICkit3Plus GUI programs for the PICkit2 and 3 from one of the Great Cow BASIC developers. So far I've only been using the PICkit2Plus which has been upgraded to cope with the new enhanced mid range 8 bit PICs - it's not just a new dat file, but the new scripts needed to program the current and newer chips. I have also had the bandgap bug for chips like the PIC12F675 fixed (the value is preserved, and can now be changed if it's been corrupted by the original PICkit2 GUI).

A donation (£23 GBP) is required which goes toward a three-year code-signing certificate to make Windows happy. The code was offered to Microchip but they were not interested (predictable I guess, they have their shiny new PICkit4 with "pay per feature" software).

From the PICLIST regarding the new ICD4 (not PICkit4:

"
- ICD4 cannot provide any target power unless an external power adaptor is
connected. The ICD3 on the other hand can provide target power from the USB
supply alone, and has no connection for external power.

- The external power adaptor required is 9V DC. There are few places in the
documentation that state this. It's a 2.5mm pin DC jack, centre positive (as
expected, but not stated anywhere I could find). Nor is there anything I can find that
states the range of acceptable DC input voltage.

- Programmer won't program if it detects residual power on the programming pins
(comes up with a warning and won't let you continue), not a problem with ICD3.
While this seems like a reasonable precaution, it can create some problems. It
doesn't seem to be a feature that the user can confgure (set threshold) or turn off,
using MPLABX IDE v4.15 anyhow. The project I am working on presently will
ultimately be battery powered, but for development it's powered by the ICD. I have
an FTDI USB/USART cable connected to the uC serial port for debugging... TXD
from PC pushes up the uC supply rail enough to bring up the warning. Fixed by
adding 10k in series with TXD and 1k across uC VDD/VSS... works, just kind of a
hassle. Would be nice to plug in a programmer/debugger and have it work without
modifying the hardware.

- The ICD4 is taller and heavier than the ICD3, and has a metal (aluminium) case.

- The LED bar across the top of the ICD4 looks cool.

I'd normally suggest having a look on AliExpress.com, but you have probably left it a bit late to get anything from China before Christmas due to the usual Christmas postal delays which start around now and continue through to January next year.
