Running Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop, ran sudo apt-get install lcdproc, running version 0.5.5-2, plugged in the LCD backpack and the backlight remained off, but text came up on the screen:

"AT+GCAP AT+GCAP CAP xp> xp>" The spaces had two pixel characters.
I'm using the latest LCDSmartie beta with windows 7. I have a laptop with Ubuntu on it I can bring into work tomorrow to test. I'll see if I can test the serial side of things as well.
Bought a few 16x2 lcds on ebay for around US$3.50 each, the rest of the components were either on hand or bought at Jaycar. The PIC was a hassle, my microchip account was acting funny, but finally got my samples this week. Programmed with a PicKit3 and MPLAB 8.76. Got LCD Smartie up and running, playing around with plugins. Got Outlook email and Yahoo weather going on it. Very impressed. Thanks again. I still have two 18F2550's left, might try the IR Toy next. :D
Thanks. Yeah, I do a bit of prototyping at work and wanted a simple way to hand load the MMA7455L and Venus FLPx634 GPS chips (the other cut out). I'm using 6 or 7 year old solder paste that has not been kept refrigerated. Bought a few tubs and forgot about them, then just kept using it as is. Never had a problem with it. These two breakouts will be used to help me prototype another design floating around in my head. :)
Here's a photo of the one I put together. I managed to bridge *all* of the pins under the USB connector, and that was a major pain to clean up. There's just so little room for getting the iron under there.
Here's a tip: Whenever I get those mini USB connectors, I bend the metal tab on the back up so I can solder the pins and sometimes even snap the tab off.
Built the HV Programmer from a free PCB a while ago, just sorting through photos on my mobile the other day and found it. I used 0603 parts as we have reels of them at work, and R1 i think was 20k, I used two 10k's in series. I mainly use it as just a DC-DC converter to give me 12-13V output.
