Project logs / Re: Really universal soldering controller
Hi guys. It's really great that project is still alive.
I have two controllers assembled a long time ago and i faced up with a problem on one of them, the 245 jbc handle is no longer determined by controller it just show "no instrument" on display. Recently it worked great. C210 handle works fine on this controller. I just checked this handle on the second controller and it works well. Please advice what should I check?

I tried installing it on the notebook I use most of the time. It has Fedora 29 on it,
It wouldn't compile correctly.

I guess the safer option is to wait for the pickit 3.5 to arrive.
You shouldn't compile the firmware. Try on Windows PC. You should:
1. The firmware file "US_Firmware.X.production.hex" from archive UniSolder52_software.rarfrontUS_Firmware.XdistPIC32_Standaloneproduction should be put into the folder with installed utility.
2. Run pic32prog.exe under command prompt. It should detect your PIC32.
3. To programm MCU print the string: pic32prog US_Firmware.X.production.hex
EDIT: Do not forget to power up the front board.
Tried flashing the firmware, mplab ipe does not recognize my knock-off pickit2.
.....
You can use pickit2 with pic32prog utility. I programmed the Unisolder MCU with my PicKit 2 before I got pickit 3.
Does the optical sensor board need to be powered from the back board to program it? My pick it 3 does not see the PIC12F615 when I just plug it in without external power. It's stupid but I cannot find an rj11 cable right now :)

Edited to add: I am using pickit3 to power it with 3.375v. Error is deviceid (0000000) does not match expected deviceid. Obviously the target is not recognized. Do I need to increase the voltage?
You can easily increase up to 5V. This pic has the wide range of powering.
.....but there's also a 6 pin header. What is it for? I cannot find clear pictures of it being connected to anything, and I am not able to figure it out from the schematics unfortunately
This 6-pin header is for flashing the microcontroller on sensor board. The firmware for sensor is in the sensor folder in the software archive.

Mine was from Digikey, so i have no reason to doubt its quality. but everybody has a few bad apples. and I had a sample size of 1.
You can check that it works or not. The simliest way is using Arduino board and any TV or any remote control.
I'm still having trouble programming my unisolder (well, TBH, haven't looked at it for a few weeks).  I now have a Pickit 3, not sure if that'll help... the big problem is, I don't have windows. Well, I tech have windows running in a VM on a Unraid build, but was having an issue getting Windows to detect the USB programmer.  Can anyone describe how you would go about programming the main chip (already installed in a complete board) using Linux?.. or, if not possible, confirm that Windows is required.  Maybe I am missing something, but I see pretty much no instructions about how to program the board.
Hi progrock, you do not need Windows. MPLAB-X IDE works perfectly under Linux. Just install it and use MPLAB IPE to flash your controller.
My system is Linux Lite. See attached screenshot.

Hi guys, I've finished my second UniSolder station.
Nice looking and good functionality, I can't see any to improve. Is the tip exchange plate is factory mounted to that place or you change it?
Thank you Minkok for my job evaluation.
Regarding the tip plate it's original position I haven't rebuild the enclosure. The only thing was done just removed some plastic inside the house.

Hi guys, I've finished my second UniSolder station and I'd like to share with you the result. The enclosure is the former burned JBC station, the touching sensor from Minkok.
It has some defects around the front panel I think how to solve that if you have some tricks I will appreciate that.
It was a challenge to put all stuff into the enclosure it has too small area inside.
