Being in the UK, shipping stuff here is always expensive :-(
I've been using seeed for a couple of years and just recently smart-prototyping and immediately noticed the difference in shipping costs for DHL etc. I never check the package weights.
That said, Smart-prototyping only seem to offer a courier service, while Seeed still offer a surface mail and airmail which is a lot cheaper but also a lot more slower.
I spent most of it on the Makerspace stands, which as Mick said were packed with cool projects. I'll have to post pics of my RKade Pi mini arcade cabinet. Ed's Laser Caper was great. We got to play it on Sunday at the very end. We met with lots of other UK and Irish maker. Guys and gals from London, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Dublin. We also spent some quality time with our friends Aaron from Oomlout and the indefatigable Mitch Altman
@Clay, I came by your stand but you guys were busy and I never got the chance to say hi. Great looking boards by the way :-)
Wow, I never realised the costs had came down so much. $3000 is a fraction of what we originally paid. The one thing I do remember about getting the injection modelling tool done was the quotes we got were all over the place, cost wise. The most expensive quote came from Taiwan which was totally unexpected
I got an injection mold for a hand-held case done in 1999 and it cost about £30K (GBP), I would be interested in seeing if the costs have come down since then
We've got a few UK members in the DP forums so here's a date for your diary. Maker Faire UK is back in 2013 in Newcastle on Saturday April 27th and Sunday 28th. Details are here:
If you're travelling by train, Newcastle is only 3-hours from London and an hour or so from Edinburgh, with trains every 30-minutes.
If you're flying, Newcastle Airport has very good links to Heathrow (UK, 6-flights a day), to Gatwick (UK, 3-flights a day), to Amsterdam (Netherlands, 4-flights a day) and to Paris CDG (France, 3-flights a day) so you can change at one of these airports.
Also have a look for Maker Faires, Maker Faire UK is on Saturday and Sunday, April 27th and 28th, 2013 at the Centre for Life, Newcastle. There's also many Mini Maker Faires as well, Edinburgh is in April as well.Check http://makerfaire.com/
@Mick, greetings from Newcastle. I'm actually a member from Newcastle/NE Makerspace so we would love you to come along and meet us sometime. Our makerspace is open every Mondays/Tuesday/Wednesday evenings 6.00pm to 9.00/10.00pm. Welcome Wednesdays are my favourite as we get a lot of people visiting us on those evenings. But if a evening is difficult to get to, we also meet on the last Saturday of the month and have a full day of maker and hacker stuff going on.
We're quite active in the 3D printer side of things, I think we have 6 members who have built their own units.
@Ian, It would be great to see you at Maker Faire UK. Aaron from Oomlout was there last time and we hope he'll make it again this year.
Great looking project, I've not used the PSoC for years.
It was the great project name that got my attention: "Loki" Norse God of mischief and also the code name of the Sinclair Research's "SuperSpectrum" which never got built (or even designed)
