CPLD programmable logic / Re: XC9500XL support in Vivado 2013.4 Webpack
"Vivado has replaced ISE however Xilinx is very well aware that a large number of their customers are not ready to migrate to only Vivado and have kept the ISE toolset around. Thankfully you can download ISE and all of its past releases."

So again: the XC9500L will not be supported in Vivado, and therefore we are forced to install and use an outdated tool chain? Is that the implication?

Open Bench Logic Sniffer / Re: OLS files and utilities - Windows, Linux, Mac
Hi, Tayken... I'm using WinXP SP3+ on an IBM R51 laptop with Jawi's ols-0.9.6 SP1 client released 29 October 2012. I don't know what the firmware version is because that's the problem; the firmware metadata is not being displayed. My OLS was purchased from Seeed in mid-January 2013, so that may give someone an idea what firmware it may contain. But then again, you never know what you're getting firmware-wise when you are buying from Seeed, sometimes they don't keep up. Yes, I could flash the latest firmware. But that's not the subject of this "no firmware metadata" discussion. Plus, the device seems to be working fine except for the firmware information. I wish I had the time and knowledge to fix this myself and contribute back - but I don't. Best regards...

Perhaps "Kees" is the Cypress Employee with Cypress forum profile and post-list here:

There are some YouTube videos by the Kees "Impedance Meter". Is this the video series regarding ESR?. Links in this thread:

But when using Jawi's client, the "show device metadata" button comes up blank. In addition, using test mode and connecting to the wing connector does not give the correct test pattern, so I don't think I'm quite there yet. Suggestions?

I just got a new OLS from Seeed. I also followed all the instructions and am using Jawi's latest client.

I also cannot get the client to "show device metadata".

I have not tried the cable to wing connector in test mode. I'll try and get around to that soon. I wouldn't be surprised if the cable arrangement is wrong. The cable instructions are not clear at all; to me anyway.

But it looks like there's definitely something wrong with the "Show Device Metadata". Maybe Seeed is shipping with outdated firmware again - dunno, can't check the Metadata :-(

For this I am using an old (but yummy) IBM R51 laptop with Windows XP SP3+ and the latest JRE.

Open Bench Logic Sniffer / Re: What is "Test Mode" in the Capture -> Aquisition dialog
I think this self test mode is explained (rather poorly IMO) in Gadget Factory's "screencast" at this page:

http://http://www.gadgetfactory.net/logicsniffer/index.php?n=LogicSniffer.SelfTestMode

Here they use an "IDE" cable (they don't specify what type, I would assume it is an older 40-pin IDE F/F cable) to connect a user-populated wing header (the OLS doesn't come with a populated wing header) to the buffered pins in order to see the self test output in "loopback". I haven't tried it myself yet...

Open Bench Logic Sniffer / OLS Download at Gadget Factory - Not Up to Date
Warning, at my post time, the version of Jawi's OLS Client included with the drivers on the Gadget Factory site is out of date (at least with the GF Windows Expert archive release V.3.0.8). The GF archive includes OLS Client V.0.9.4 vs. the current V.0.9.6.1 (a.k.a V.0.9.6 SP1).

I installed only the drivers from Gadget Factory and then got the latest version of Jawi's OLS Client directly from Jawi's site at:

http://http://www.lxtreme.nl/ols/

The link to Jawi's site is not included on the GF page. I had to find it by digging around here at DP.

The same problem is likely the case for Gadget Factory's bundled version of the Java Runtime Edition (JRE). So rather than trust GF, I get the latest JRE directly from Java.com.

It might benefit new OLS users if GF either 1. kept the contents of their release archives up to date or 2. (better IMO) just provide external links where the user can directly download the latest OLS Client and JRE. Just providing the links is best for all in my opinion. The drivers seem mature compared to the evolving OLS Client from Jawi and JRE is updated very often these days (sometimes daily or weekly). It seems like a wasted effort for GF to keep up with the OLS client and JRE all the time.

A link to the official Java test page might be appropriate as well. Here the user can test their JRE to see if it is up to date and if-not link to the official page to download the JRE update. (There are many Java test sites out there that are malicious and even try to get you to install a poisoned copy of JRE):

http://http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Maybe someone will reflect this issue to GF. I don't want to sign up for an account and manage yet another password just for this issue.

Open Bench Logic Sniffer / Re: Logic Sniffer not reconized
FYI, even if you have not installed the Microchip USB drivers, when you plug your OLS into the USB port, the green PWR and red TRIG light should remain on and (on Windows XP at-least) the Found New Hardware Wizard should eventually pop-up. At least that's how it is on my OLS V1.04 hardware - which seems to work after the drivers are installed and Jawi's OLS Client is started.

Project development, ideas, and suggestions / Re: home made QFP50 dangerous proto board
@fcobcn

Thanks for the link. I'm pretty sure the Author of the modification at the link you provide is confusing "play" with "backlash". When he states there is 0.2 to 0.3mm of "backlash", I'm almost positive he's referring to "play" or inaccuracy in the leadscrew. Backlash is something else. Backlash is how much you have to turn the leadscrew before the surface moves. Backlash may include play distance as well depending on which direction you move and which direction the leadscrew face was resting on prior to movement.

Nevertheless, 0.2mm of play is surprising to me. Perhaps his leadscrews and/or acme nuts are worn. Certainly 0.2mm is unacceptable. I wonder if you've measured your MF70's play?

I have toyed with a few FM70's on store shelves. I have seen more than a quarter turn of backlash on the x and y axis, but the z axis wasn't so bad. Many report backlash problems with the z axis though. I don't know why the z axis is reported to be worse, it has the weight of the spindle on it.

Anyway, so much backlash is a problem. backlash and play compensation in the z axis can be compensated for by repeatedly running the lead screw against the faces before making the cutting movement. But most software available doesn't allow for this and it is not only time consuming, its hard on the hardware - and this technique won't work in the x and y axes for constrained cuts.

The theoretically easiest way to fix this machine would be to replace the lead screw nuts with anti-backlash nuts. Compression/tension or constriction acme nuts are the cheapest solution. Ball-nuts are a better solution, but you have to change the lead-screw as well, and that gets expensive - fast. That's what the Author in your link has decided to do.

See here for one explanation of the anti-backlash nut types...

http://http://www.cncroutersource.com/precision-acme-leadscrew-nut.html

I have heard the much cheaper ($95) Proxxon 27100 Micro Compound Table Model KT70 is much higher resolution than the MF70, and at X-travel 5-9/32-Inch (134mm), Y-travel 1-13/16-Inch (460mm), the work area is much larger.

The problem is the KT70 is an x/y table only. You have to mount it on something and you have to add something for the Z-axis. But for just cutting PC boards, it might be possible to make a simple modification to a drill press for the z-axis. YouTube has some videos of KT70 CNC conversions. Here's a couple:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3E_QiBY3M9E

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSAUMcqLPYw

I have never seen a KT70 table. So I have no idea what the backlash is like. But I seriously doubt any of these cheap Proxxon products pay much attention to backlash because they're really intended for manual use, where backlash isn't really an issue.

Nice work, but I have some questions...

The Armadillo retrofit kit doesn't seem to include the parts to mount the steppers (Kiwi Retrofit). Where do you get that? I've seen the plans at http://kitconversion.altervista.org/. Is that what you used?

EDIT: The kitconversion.altervista.org plans do what the EU135 Armadillo kit does. EU135 seems like a lot of money for these conversion parts.

What did you do for lead-nut conversion. The backlash on the FM70 is notoriously poor, especially in th Z-axis. Did you use anti-backlash acme nuts or ball nuts? Where did you get them?

Do you have any motional feedback encoders or zero-set feedback?

Bus Pirate Support / Re: Upgrading v2go
I was able to successfully complete the V0g to V4.1 firmware upgrade on my V2go hardware using the above referenced Wiki pages.

A couple of comments:

The recommended terminal emulator, Teraterm Pro V3.1.3 (latest version at post-time), by default supports only four COM ports. The FTDI driver install may require support for a higher COM ports number (read about a Teraterm Pro work-around for this below). Instead of Teraterm Pro, I suggest you try the free Bray's Terminal program instead. (I am not affiliated in any way with this software except as a user). Bray's Terminal may be downloaded here:

WHOOPS! The Forum won't allow me to post URL's! Says I'm too "Spammy" - he he; at least it has a sense of humor...

Google Bray's Terminal, it is hosted on a Google Site. Or let's try this (shhhhh):

sites-dot-google-dot-com-fwdslash-site-fwdslash-braypp-fwdslash-terminal

Features:

Free, no spyware, no adware, no Email harvesting.
Supported software, not abandonware.
Portable, zero installer, single ~300KB .exe file.
Split re-sizable Tx/Rx windows.
Simple file send.
Rx and Tx characters counter.
Baudrate up to 256kbps & custom Baudrates.
Up to 64 COM ports.
Log to file (hex & string).
Hex, ASCII, Decimal, & Binary support.
24 custom transmit macros with auto repeat function.
Scripting (with graph/visualization support).
Remote control over TCP/IP - Telnet.

2. Here is a work-around I found on the Web somewhere to allow Teraterm V3.1.3 support for up-to and including sixteen COM ports:

Example: To allow Teraterm Pro to support 10 COM ports, edit the file teraterm.ini and change the line:

MaxComPort=4

to read

MaxComPort=10

Valid arguments for MaxComPort range from 1 through 16.
