I'd love to do this at home but with a 3 year old who deems himself lord keeper of the light switches it would be flooded with light and be pretty much invisible. I'm glad you enjoy the project. Keep up the good work.
I would go for the kit as my smd parts are fairly scarce and trying to grab stuff from online retailers leads to keep filling a cart to massive proportions and then there's the whole issue of wich 3v3 ldo regulator. A kit like this would allow for some quick prototyping and should be a good point to start or grow a smd parts bin.
Well that green coat looks like one slick finish. The homebrew finishes I've seen use glass paint and toner method to protect areas that are to soldered. But with green coat being solderable and containing flux embedded in it would make it a real time saver.
