Project logs / Re: Really universal soldering controller
that is the DinikS board based on my very first schematics, it has only on-chip static protection and no filtering. Most likely Ic HEF4001 needs a replacement. Much better look here:
http://dangerousprototypes.com/forum/index.php?topic=7218.5235
and change of resistors:
Config. R for BSS138P - N-Ch, use 1.2V
 for 1.5V - R5-20K and R2*-110k without Rcomp
 for 1.4V - R5-28K and R2*-91k without Rcomp
 for 1.3V - R5-56K and R2*-91k without Rcomp
 for 1.2V - R5-62K and R2*-82k without Rcomp
 for 1.1V - R5-82K and R2*-82k without Rcomp

You were right. That ic was dead. Swapped it out and things are back to normal. Thank you.

Project logs / Re: Really universal soldering controller
Hi all,

Sorry if this question has been asked before but this thread is so long it’s hard to find things now.

I’ve been using my unisolder for a couple years now with no issues (it’s awesome). But the other day I did a tip swap while the station was on and now I’m having side unexpected behavior. When I have my station powered in and the jbc handle/tip in my hand it does not heat but does display an accurate temperature on oled. When I place the handle in the stand it goes immediately to full power heating and stays there instead of going to standby low-temp mode. If I don’t pull the handle back out it starts to overheat very quickly as you can imagine.

Any idea what would cause this all the sudden? I don’t see any physical damage on the pcbs but I’m not familiar enough with the design of everything to troubleshoot much beyond that.

It is neither feasible, nor possible - you will have considerable temperature noise between the instruments, unless the transformer is HUGELY overestimated, for example 600+ watts, and even then there is a close coupling between secondaries, because they are wound in parallel to each other. So when one instrument turns on, the voltage spike around this turn-on will penetrate another controller's secondary winding, possibly to a great extend.

Ok, understood. Two completely separate stations it is :) . Thanks for the quick response.

Hi All, I have been using my unisolder for a while now and love it. Thinking about putting together another one so that I can have multiple tools usable at the same time.

Question: Is it feasible to use a single toroidal transformer for both controllers? Thinking something with ~300VA rating and dual secondary windings designed to offer 24v (parallel) and 48v (series) out. One 24V secondary to first controller, the second to second controller. The goal would be to cut down on mechanical size of two independent transformers within my enclosure that would house both controllers. Any other concerns to be aware of?

Hi All,
I'm starting to build my Unisolder and am having some trouble getting my back board working correctly. I think I have damaged the U1 3.3v regulator so I have ordered some spares to replace it with. I have 33.4V at Vin pin 7 and 0v on pin 8. Anything else to check before just swapping that part and powering on the back board again?

I have also forked a version of of the unisolder notes github page that 5N44P shared that I've tried to collect useful stuff all in one place. I added a Digikey BOM, along with some pictures I found useful, the schematics from page 1 and the chips tool by Bug82. https://github.com/lauer2356/unisolder-notes

This is a great project and I'm looking forward to getting it up and running. Thanks for all the hard work and support guys!
