Client software / Re: OLS signal display annotation style
I like both. But I reckon style 1 communicates more clearly because it shows the highs and lows bright and clear while it displays the annotation without being too disturbing! :) I like it Jan! :) Thanks.M

Bus Pirate Support / BP and OLS to EEV Blog
Hello there,

The EEV blog is a series of video blogs on electronics. I am sure many of you are aware of its existence. For the rest of you:

Dave Jones, the engineer making the series has much focus on stuff for the hobbyists, but talks about all sorts of electronics topics. Many tens of thousands watch his blogs. He is very passionate, which annoys some viewers whilst captivate others (like myself).

A sample? Here is a good one about the pickit3. Dave reckon it was pointless because the pickit2 was so good. It is funny: http://www.eevblog.com/2009/10/21/eevbl ... er-review/

***

Anyway, what I wanted to suggest was send a sample of the Bus Pirate and Open Bench Logic Analyser to him. He loves open hardware projects, and I will explain why he will like these two in the next paragraph. Personally I would feel proud seeing them in the blog. But more importantly, and the reason I really made this thread is because I think it will scale the number of users of our projects. This is mostly because the vast number of users of EEV Blog resonate with the target audience of DangerousPrototypes. And I must admit I like this community a lot, so this would induce great pleasure. Furthermore, Dave writes on his website that he accept these things for review, as he has done many times in the past.

The Bus Pirate is an obvious candidate because of its low cost/open/great capabilities. Why did I suggest the logic analyser? He did a 2 part series on logic analysers, and I reckon, based on the criteria in his rant, he will like ours.

I hope I don't annoy anyone with this thread. I am pretty new to the community, and perhaps I am commenting on something which is not my responsibility. However I do a lot of marketing as part of my real job; and this is great for us for at least three reasons: Because the users of EEV Blog resonate with out target audience, because the number of users of EEV blog is so big, and because it would cost us next to nil to execute, relative to what I predict it will pay off.

I have corresponded with Jones via email twice, and I think many of our values will resonate positively with his. (Please don't tell him I said that, we are not friends at all! But you get to know some sides of people after watching them for hundreds of hours on YouTube :D And he is a down to earth, realistic guy. I think. )

Please share with me your views. Thank you.

Kind regards.M

Bus Pirate Support / Re: Why isn't my scope seeing the Bus Pirate signals?
Anton Todorov, you are spot on. I tried using external pullups with lower value than 10k. First I tested 2.4kohm, that improved the peek voltage, but the clock signal was still nowhere near square. Then I swapped to 1.5k, and this is the result for 400kHz! Woha! Check it out!

Ian, this gives me the initial inclination of modifying my BP to handle 400kHz with onboard pullups. Do you think this is something I should attempt? And do you think it is best to substitute the LDOs or resistors? I expect you have considered this already, so please share your view with me.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Marius

Dear Ian,

You were right. I had a voltage divider. I solved that. Now the signal is 3V3.

However, this made the clock look worse. My evaluation is that for I2C, the clock is only acceptable for 50kHz or less.

Do you want to post pictures from my scope?

Thanks.M

General discussion / Re: Which book to get?
Get "Origin of species" by Charles Darwin. It will explain most things about life. Perhaps not MCUs, everything else ;) You can get it for 7 bucks! :) M
OK, related to this, I'm using the .cam file by Seeed, but v0.94 and v0.95 both have size issues with the drill file, it is waaay larger than my board. Anybody had this problem.
I have the same issue.M

Dear Ian,

I carried out the suggested changes, and will be submitted to itead on Sunday. I will solder and mail a board to you once they arrive. I will use the 208 Pine Street-address. You can use it, throw it away or whatever ;)

When I overlaid all the gerber-files in Viewplot, it seemed the drill-holes were there, but it looked like they were scaled to an enormous size, scattered far outside the outline of the board. If you can find the time, that would be great, otherwise I will submit the board anyway. Hopefully, there is no drillhole-issue, and my lack of experience is causing my worries.

Thanks! :)

Kind regards,
Marius

Dear Ian and everyone else whom may be reading,

Ian, thank you for this video. I've watched it at least five times :) I did all the revisions you suggested. Attached are my new *.brd-file, and gerber-files.

1. Will itead cut the pcb shape I defined in "20 Dimension", or the 10x10cm square size?
2. There seems to be an issue with my drilling information in the gerber-files. Do you agree?
3. Do you notice anything else?

Thanks.

Kind regards,
Marius

General discussion / My first gerber files. These OK for itead? Giveaway inside.
Hello there,

I am getting my first PCB by a board house. That is very exciting. It is a smart-card-reader-probe. It lets the smart card talk to the card reader whilst being sniffed by the Open Bench Logic Sniffer from a header. It also workes as a socket ready for Bus Pirate hacking. Great for hacking smart cards to get free stuff, coffee, laundry. That kind of thing.

I believe I have done everything according to itead specs, but it would be great if somebody could double-check before I send it off :)

If you are the first to help me and everything works out, I will send you a free gold plated pcb, if you want, when it comes back (with free shipping)! :)

Attached are all the gerber files, and the eagle *.brd-file.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,
Marius
