Project logs / Re: Really universal soldering controller
It works now running on DC power!  But, when I first apply DC power, it gives short beep, then long beep, then displays "21".  Briefly, it shows "no instrument" (iron is already connected before DC power is applied), then briefly it says "heater shortcircuit" and then it works normally.  Does anyone know what "21" means?   And is this behavior expected?

One thing I do not have connected is the iron outer to earth.  But I have no earth so I would think it does not matter for DC power.

I do not know why it did not work before on AC transformer.  The only thing I can think is maybe the 6 conductor plug is backwards?  I look at the pin configuration on each end and it is different.  If I plug in the wrong way, maybe that is why it does not work?  EDIT: I flipped cable around and it still works so that is not the problem.

I wish to try powering my new Unisolder (purchased from Tindie) with DC power.  Maybe this transformer I am using is not good.  I cannot see polarity for DC input on PCB.  Can someone tell me how to connect DC power?  Is schematic same for new and old board?
Thank you!

Hello,
My Unisolder 5.2 that was made several years ago has been great. But I just noticed something recently...sometimes when iron is not connected, it will show “heater open.”  But sometimes it will show “no instrument.”  Is this behavior normal?  I do not notice it before. My iron connector is not modified. The connections to SenseA/B and ID resistors are in the iron socket side.

And it should work if it is checked there. We need to be sure that is not from you:
In that case you can only do simple things - make extra paralell connections to p5 of J4 & J8 and repeat the  same to the p6.
You need to check Iron connections J2 with multimeter for continuity to the mosfets and the resistance of the tip if it presents.
Or ask a frend for a help in your place

Thank you for your help.  I will try and see what I can find when I have some free time.  I have asked Tindie seller for help also but he can't say much.

The connections should be in mOhm range and it is hard to be measured, anyway even there was a small signal FW will detect it.
You need to check Iron connections J2 with multimeter for continuity to the mosfets and the resistance of the tip if it presents.
You need to check FW detection path - SHUNT and VSHUNT paths to MCU pins and the VSHUNT  amplitude.
You need to check FW command path – MCU /p2 – ON/OFF to U3 and HEATER1 paths and their amplitudes (pulses)
And finally the workability of the first channel driver.

I must have misunderstood you about J4 and J8 pin connections and how to check it.  Thank you for your advice but this sounds very difficult for me to check these things.  I bought this premade board from Tindie because I thought it would just work.

I will chek on p.1, but p.2 is not a problem. Any action on buttons or encoder takes it out of sleep mode, and this is intentional, and it has always been this way.

For p.1 - remove C85 and C86 on the back PCB if you installed them.

Are you sure this applies to my problem?  Iron does not get hot at all.   Also, I have JBC 245, not 210. I do see C85 and C86 so could remove if it will fix it.

I should be more clear. The controller shows JBC C245 but when I plug iron in, the display does not change. I will attach pic with iron plugged in. Sometimes when plugging iron in, the display will flash briefly the temperature screen but this does not happen always.

Okay, I have wired up this new controller and have a problem. The normal screen is displayed and it recognizes my iron, JBC 245. But when I plug in the iron, the display does not change and the iron does not heat up. Since I have only one type of iron, the connections and resistors are wired into the board connections, not inside the iron connector. Any idea what is wrong?
