Oops – Again


Sjaak likes to design (and build) PCBs in his spare time. This has a big downside as he has a busy daytime job, which makes him a bit less focussed during the design process. He used a small crystal of which he didn’t had a proper footprint of. No problem as it is a few clicks away in eagle. Unfortunately the datasheet he used had two versions of the crystal; one ‘regular’ and a reversed one.

Sjaak is recently being acused of being a soldering alien and he gets his trusty old soldering iron and removed the crystal, flipped it over and resolder it using some small wires. After the quick fix it worked as expected. The board has some other minor nuisances (prolly because of the late night design) so expect a new revision soon. It is BTW an ESP8266 breakout, which uses a custom 1200×1200 mil PCB (loosely based on 30x30mm SOB). Using mils instead of mm make it easier to place imperial stuff more symmetrical.

  1. I usually place my board centered at the origin (i.e., 0, 0). This makes it simple to lay the board out symmetrically no matter what units are used. The board size, be it metric or imperial, doesn’t matter.

  2. I made exact same mistake recently with CFPX-104 crystal from IQD Frequency Products. I overlooked the fact, that pinout in the datasheet is an underside view (and recommended pad layout drawing has no pad numbers whatsoever).

    Sure, my mistake, but… I’d blame the datasheet, tbh – who the heck cares about component’s underside? That’s not how we design PCBs! :)

  3. after some seriously cheap ($4.5) super quality boards from electrodragon (I love the Wi07-3 with ceramic antenna and Wi07-12 with pcb antenna) with all pins broken out, I really think a breakout board like this is a waste of resources. I don’t see a way of DP selling this for under $5 so I’d really like to see a point of such board… some combo of ESP8266 with pic32mx or some 16bit pic and few sensors on board with broken out some io’s, sd/mmc card slot, battery with charger .. yes, but bigger and more expensive version of Wi07-12 ?! why? I don’t even see a voltage regulator on this board and headers are double so you can’t push it to breadboard ?!?!?! What happened to usability study of the DP projects?

    1. This board is not a dangerous prototypes board and is not ever intended to be one. I accidently selected red as soldermask and that is where any ressemblance ends.
