Jaluino Bee v2.0 board giveaway

Sebastien Lelong gave us a Jaluino Bee v2.0 board to give away.  Leave a comment on this post with a project idea, and it could be yours on Thursday. By Sebastien’s request, this week we’re looking for the funniest project idea.

Jaluino Bee is a 5x5cm board, using SMD components, is powered by PIC18F27J53, provides USB, RTCC, SD-Card and Xbee socket if needed. It costs ~$10. You can find more specs here

I designed a first version, lots of troubles, then a second version which is quite nice and seems to work right out of the box. Eventually, I’d like to be able to provide kits, maybe even board, ready-to-use.  Jaluino is an open source, open hardware project.

The next step for me would be to gain attention from “ealry adopters”, who would try to use it and hopefully give feedback.

  1. My idea would be use the Jaluino Bee in my electronic deadbolt to create an point of access to add and remove users(people allowed in) with one twist! I want to add TV Gameshow lights and sounds to the keypad. e.g. Wrong code or you have no access with blink the keypad RED and sound BUZZZZZZ. Like the Family Feud X strike or if you are successfull GREEN and the DING DING DING.

  2. By connecting it to a PIR sensor, and generating audio via PWM,, would be a great way to scare people. Something like “Could you get something in my room…”, and when entering the room a creep sound plays via a speaker…

  3. With Jaluino Bee, the funny project I can think is, making a AVR destroyer like Ian shared flash destroyer a long ago.
    But this would emulate an genetal USBTiny device when connected to PC but when user run WINAVR to program the AVR, it will set some bad codes in the AVR to make it dead.
    Like disabling reset pin(RSTDISBL fuse) just after the flash programming is done.

    I’ll give this to my friend who will program his AVR with this like an ROM because he’ll not be able to reprogram it further unless he uses parallel programming to correct the fuses.

  4. I’d have a chance to learn PIC micro-controllers if I’d receive this board.
    If not, then will buy and try some time in the future.
    RTC and SD card slot makes it very good part for some kind of data logger. And data can be accessed either by wired way (usb) or wireless (xbee).

  5. I would use the Jaluino Bee to create an “Anti-Procrastination Device”. The idea of the project would be to force a person to stop procrastinating after a set amount of time. An LCD with the RTC could be used as a countdown timer. You would put an executable (such as firefox.exe) on an SD card and have the PIC instantiate itself as a mass storage device on the computer using the card, which you would then use to open the executable. As the counter begins to count down, various warnings would be given with buzzers and LEDs as time ran short. If the timer counts down to zero, the PIC would erase the contents of the SD card completely, stopping your procrastination prematurely.

    If you wanted to be really masochistic about it, you could hook up an XBee module to the board, along with another XBee enabled LED sign labeled “Procrastinating!” with a buzzer outside your office for all your coworkers (and perhaps your boss) to see! Now that would be some motivation to stop browsing at work, all in a package that takes advantage of the features of the Jaluino!

  6. Based on the offered peripherals a talking clock is the easiest project I can think of. There is an app note on how to implement LPC speech synthesis on MC website. I would need a PIC programmer though.

  7. I will make a wireless BEE robot which sits in top of one of my university building which can predict and log the weather data and report back when its tummy(memory) is full.

  8. Hmm, maybe something to help me actually get up for uni on time….

    Could put some tunes on the SD card, old fashioned wavetable stylee, RTC would make it all accurate.

    And if need be an Xbee link to a wireless electric shock wristband…. or not xD
    Could utilize the clock display to notify of emails/facebook notifications – and therefore use the USB link to my PC.

  9. This is the sort of project I like to see and would love to be an early adopter. A board like this isn’t for one fun project, it is for many. It serves as a platform for so, so many things.

    I can already see the lower cost IR TOY 3 being developed on it. IR TOY with stand alone mode, data logging to the SD card with time stamp from the real time clock would be fantastic. With all the I/O available and extra memory even an IRDA transceiver/stack could be added.

    With the plug in modules things like RS232 and RS485 (for DMX) could be added. All the code I have here could finally see the light of day.

    Being more a software guy I am looking for a platform to port the Honken_JTR stack to the PIC18 J series. Breadboards only go so far and it is difficult to test sensitive circuits (like the RTC oscillator) on a bread board. Hardware that breaks out all the I/O and supports all the PIC features is the way to go.

    Sometime ago I (newfound) helped (a little) with porting the JAL USB stack to this PIC. http://www.microchip.com/forums/fb.ashx?m=569390 and that was my first look at JAL for some years. It really has advanced quite a lot from Wouter’s original version and it is a language I would love to see get more exposure. Just yesterday I was pondering Mikro pascal from Mikroelektronika but @ $200, well, not all of us have that sort of coin floating about. JAL is a pascal like language and it deserves more exposure. Those of us would have used delphi would understand…

    Some time a go I designed my own general purpose, bread board friendly PIC board for any and all of the 28-pin PICs. All the differences and options were catered for with provision for two voltage regulators, RTC, USB or not etc but being mostly a software guy I never did get any of these boards made. However will an existing platform that is open hardware I could bring all the knowledge gained from research to add to this hardware base. Unfortunately there does not appear to be any schematic or PCB files posted anywhere.

    A board like this (and the embedded adventures PIC18F14K50 board) would go very high up on my “something that every hacker should have” list.

    I Really hope this board along with the prototype shields gets manufactured but I would like to see the final proposed design to see if there is anything I could add too. :)

  10. Nice board. If the kit really costs $10 and you can get cheap shipping, it would be a real competitor fot MSP430 wth way more power.

    a web controlled quadcopter that drops something to unsuspecting people would be fun

  11. My idea of using this would be in a remote controlled car or short distance aerial vehicle, sending telemetry data back to base station & show a nice map/detail of the vehicle, can be further updated on Google maps in realtime.

    To be used as a hobby/play/fun project or for reconnaissance activities.

  12. I’ve built a similar board, but without Xbee and SD support. I was thinking how cool it would be to make a ghost car with this. I’d bypass a few switches with relays – things like headlights, windows, door locks, wipers horn; no dangerous things like ABS, ECU, and accelerator! The processor would sit idle until interrupted by the unlocking of a door or something else. It would then honk, turn on the wiper spray, emit a roar through the car amp (raw audio file loaded onto SD card) and do other general crazy stuff, then settle down. When the drive is done and the door is locked again it would emit a tired ‘sigh’. Imagine how that would spook people out! :-P

    The only thing else I wish the car could do is a dog-like wriggle-shake! But I’d need hydraulics on the suspension for that :-/

    After this ‘trick’ gets old, I’d use the board to tap into the ECU signals. Xbee would be useful for telemetry to a laptop.

    I would use the Jaluino Bee v2.0 board for prototyping a robot-boat-monitor for swimming pool. It would drive a small boat along the swimming pool collecting different parameters such as Ph, T°, speed of the wind , etc … and send them in real time to the PC …
    That’s would be a greatest and funny tool isn’i it ?

  15. This seems like the ideal XBee – Computer bridge. Have it sit there and log data coming in off the wireless network, then plug it into a computer and either dump the logs or watch it stream in live.

  16. This nice board could be sent to near space with an high altitude ballon.
    The RTCC and the sd card slot could be useful for logging, then you just add an XBee pro 900 and a gps module and you are ready to go!

  17. i think is the best for my project, a miniComputer for my carburator car, Dacia 1310.
    This is the big ideea on mine:
    Monitor the temperature of the cooling instalation, and start/stop the cooling auxiliar cooling ventilator when the temperature of the cooling instalation reach on a fix temperature, the temperature will be monitor ussing 18B20 temperature sensor.
    Monitor the temperature inside and outside the car, for start and stop the artizanal interior cooling sistem.
    When the car dors ar open, to start the interior ligthing, and when the dor are closed the ligth to go off using the PWM features.
    Monitor the RPM of the motor, from 2 points:
    The first point on the camsaft, and the secound from the delco to have posibilty to change the dwell angle of the contact points in the distributor
    And way not, to have a RTC clock.
    All of that conected to one serial LCD 16-2.
    and if i have the posibilty for a miniSD card, to log all the data in a file, and analize home the performance of my Dacia 1310:)

    1. and i forgot, the posibilty to verify the ligth, long/stort headlights, stop headlights, using a photoresitor
      and the monitor the consumption of the car, using a flowmeterr conected to the carburator input.

  18. The question is how will survive this board for the automotive environment (+70C…-40C).
    I guess both you and Seb are too optimistics. Finally that’s good.

  19. I want to use one as a prankster device. SD card gives storage for saving wav files to play softly via PWM and a speaker. RTCC would help prevent clock drift when syncing events (eg creepy voice says it’s time for lunch).
    RESET over RTS should allow a bootloader to reprogram wirelessly over xbee. The xbee could also be used to change settings, trigger events, and report results without having to remove and replace the device.

    Sounds like fun to me!

  20. I want to use one to learn USB, Xbee, SD-Card interfacing and RTCC. Suprisingly, I do not know all of these technologies and it will be a good chance for me to learn all of these and develop projects.

I’d use it as part of a r/c remote im building, what it would do is generate ppm frames from various potentiometers and switches on the remote then that ppm signal would be output to a radio module which beams the signal to an rx. If I get a Xbee I could add telemetry as well. The SD card slot also looks good for storing throttle curves and other curves and maybe different models.

  22. Paired with gps, xbee and temp/humidity sensors, this would allow me to log and track my kids dog while on long hikes and camping trips.

  23. My project is a Status display for our CIS system so everyone can easily monitor if errors avoid compilation on our project. with a big Digit display showing since when the CIS has been broken.

    This project can extend to a countdown display that shows the deadline of current milestone for our project.

    Fun stuff, and also pretty useful for us !

  24. I would use it to measure the methane levels in the room and if detected that someone has flatulence it would use an xbee to send it to my home server which would trigger a flashing red light and siren, spray air refresher and of course post the event to Twitter.
