Tweeting cat door

Let your cats be part of the social media explosion! The tweeting cat door project tweets a message every time a cat passes through the door. The project is based around the Electric Imp which is a Cortex M3 processor and a WiFi transmitter packed into an SD card. A breakout board for the Electric Imp is connected to a reed switch on the cat door, thus sensing the cats movement through it.

    Although the device itself is a nice piece of enginering, it totally sucks that you are depending on someone elses server where your code is stored. Also the use of the formfactor of an sd card, without obeying the pinout is totally wrong.

    Is there something special about the Imp that you have to store your code on their servers? I’ve never used one, but they seemed interesting.

      AFAIK that is the only way to use your code on them. They have a online/cloudbased IDE to develop software for it. The resulting code is also stored in cloud, and retrieved by the imp over internet (after connecting the local Accesspoint).

        That sucks. I noticed some of the processors (LPC… ?) had cloud based compilers and things like that and I specifically wouldn’t touch them because of that, I hate it when something like that suddenly changes or disappears in favour of new stuff and you have no option to just keep working with your old gear if you so choose.
