Review: Analog Devices ADF4351

Sebastian has been tinkering with the Analog Devices ADF4351 eval board and written a review. “The ADF4351 from Analog Devices (ADI) is a modern wideband PLL synthesizer with integrated low phase noise VCO. It is capable of generating signals between 35 MHz to 4400 MHz with a very low jitter of typical 0.3 ps. ADI agreed to send me the EVAL-ADF4351EB1Z, an evaluation board for the ADF4351, for review purposes.” Being an amateur radio operator (KF5OBS), Sebastian is already thinking about possible applications for this chip as a modern alternative to synthesizer chips used in some earlier radio designs. According to the ADI website this eval board lists for $175, though Sebastian reports that the chip itself goes for $8.25 each (when purchased in bulk.)

    “After trying this board out for a while, I highly recommend this chip.” The web page has some nice photos of the board, but were any actual tests done on the signal output? If it is a review, I expected to see some comment on how well the board works, if not actual numbers. FYI, the single-unit price from DigiKey on this chip is just over 14 dollars.

      I agree. But usually, if I stuff that into a review, people don’t read it because its ‘too long’. What counts for videos counts even more for text. I therefore usually take the review posts as ‘tease’ for the articles that will come in the future. Future articles will show practical examples with example waveforms, spectrum, etc.

    I am working with ADF4351 for a while. Using a micro controller to program it, written a program to calculate INT, FRAC , MOD etc for a given particular frequency. In one particular case i need to program it on its full freq range 35MHz to 4400MHz. Its working fine on upper freq range but its not working for freq less than 127MHz. If i set it for any thing less than 127MHz it does not work, output does not change for below 127MHz. Im not using ADF4351 eval board from Analog Devices but a custom board with ADF4351 on it.
