Nixie tube first light

Nixie tube supply is working great at 180 volts and 12k anode resistor.

      Trying to get the little VFD tubes going. Do you remember what we did to get it going? I put 12volt in with 560ohm to filament and other side to ground (as shown in schematic), but not sure what to with the segments. Tried +12 and gnd but no glow. Web has been particularly unhelpful.

        try to swap the polarity of the filament, +12 should be connected to the segment with its gnd on the filament’s gnd too.

    all we need is a DP flash destroyer with nixies :) with an added function, once it burns out the flash….it drives 180v trogh the chip…

    There is a reason why nixies were dropped from use, HIGH voltage and danger to experimenters may have been it! :P . I remember them operating on substatially less voltage. Hmmm…

      While not as safe as an LED, I dont consider 180-240V DC from a little booster to be super dangerous, only potentially dangerous. People who can operate laser, table saws, and/or blenders should be ok :D

        It can hurt you a bit but should be quite safe for most people. It seems like 0.5 Joules is classified as an “intrinsically safe” level of energy. Strangely enough for both electrical energy (electric fence or a strobe beacon) as well as kinetic (as from a BB gun)….

        A 2.2 uF capacitor charged to 200 volts only have 0.04 Joules of energy stored. So unless the nixie smps have a HV cap of more than 25 uF they should be considered safe.
