Workshop Video #36: Beers in Bunnie’s Workshop

in Videos by Ian | 12 comments

Andrew ‘Bunnie’ Huang is a noted open source hardware designer, XBOX hacker, and architect behind the Chumby. He welcomed us into his personal workshop while we were in Singapore for a tour and a few cold Tiger Beers.

First there’s a tour of Bunnie’s workshop that includes highlights like the pile of SMD part reels, BGA re-balling equipment, and redundant internet connection. Bunnie visits the giant parts markets and manufacturing hub in Shenzhen, China at least once a month, so in part two we ask about his experience working in Hua Qiang Bei.

A huge thanks to Bunnie for meeting up with us.

A huge thanks to the Prelinger Archive and the public domain. Several clips were taken from the amazing and free resources at archive.org. These otherwise abandoned materials helped us do something fun, open source works! Frigidaire Presents Arthur Godfrey & Le Voyage dans la lune.

A huge shout out to NASA. By some huge coincidence we met up with Bunnie minutes before the Opportunity Rover Curiosity rover landed on Mars. Not only was the engineering top notch, but the live stream is copyright free so we could include it in the video. Edit: the video erroneously labeled it the Opportunity rover landing, that is incorrect.

This is the final video from Singapore. Normal workshop videos resume next week with the open source lunar lander.

Do you have a favorite open source hacker? Let us know in the comments and we’ll try to have a beer with them the next time we’re in town.

the hot dogs and bun problems have plagued all of my cookouts since the beginning of time.

Ummmmm, that would be the ‘Curiosity’ Rover landing on Mars. Opportunity landed years ago….

Ian, thanks for the video. It was very informative. Good stuff.

    Keep up the good work.

  4. Love the world tour, keep them coming. Thanks.

Awesome!! We really need to get Bunnie to share more of his trove on knowledge. Ironic that so few local geeks know that he lives in Singapore.

Indeed. His workshop is so well equipped, and that’s not including the 40W laser cutter he just got. I should probably take a shopping trip to Shenzhen.

    Great video!!!

Pffft… I got sucked in by the whole Chumby thing. It never really worked as advertised, was (is) a nightmare to hack via a truly horrific tool chain, and has now been abandoned by Chumby Industries.

I don’t often use the word “epic”, but when I do — it’s for gems like this.
