USB POV Toy free PCB build
Here’s one you don’t see often. Matseng built a free USB POV Toy PCB. These almost never get built due to the challenging QFN chip.
The POV Toy is a hand-held persistence of vision toy that can be updated over USB. Check out our workshop video about the latest developments on this project.

Cool.
It’s actually way easier to solder a QFN than a thin-pitched leaded package if you knwo how. Surface tension is on your side for these chips.
Flux is your friend. First put enough solder on all the pins so that they are connected. Then apply flux, and use solder wick to remove all the excessive solder. If you do it correctly, you can have those chips soldered in less than 5 minutes with standard tools. I believe the FT232RL is the same package, and I managed to do it multiple times (although, the list time I did not have flux, and I destroyed 2 pins :-) )
