Little-Wire entered production at Seeed Studios

The Little-Wire, TinyAVR based multi-tool has entered production at Seeed Studios. After some initial difficulties with production setup, the first run of Little Wires has started production last week.

Last Friday they said me that they’ll start the production  immediately at that day. I’m waiting … I hope at most at the end of this week, it will be available.

I’m seeing that at fulfillment manufacturing, you almost have no power over the company. They might have another important project and yours could be delayed. But, it is better than nothing. Without them it would be very hard to market this product globally.

    Unfortunately, my web site is experiencing some kind of virus. Something, which i don’t know, edits my php files and injects unwanted code. Therefore you experience that kind of funny forwarding.

        Thanks for the advice. I tried that too but my full HTML based Doxygen documentation page also get infected. I need to re-upload time to time …

        But right now i’m working on more permanent solution.

    Update all your server applications, most of the time it is an unpatched PHPBB or wordpress install or what ever you have installed that is the infection vector that makes it posible that a robot edits all your pages.

    $19 USD each plus shipping, and it’s a kit. What’s the quantity BOM cost including the PCB? $5 or $6 bucks? Hmmm… I dunno.

    Are the chips pre-programmed? It’d be kinda weird to sell an AVR programmer kit without the micros already blown with the bootloader and USB stack. Remember, you can’t do HVSP programming with this (e.g. reset fuses). Also it looks like the reset pin has been re-purposed, so without an HVSP programmer, you can’t program this via ISP.

    Ninteen smackers – Hmmm. If you’re buying this as a programmer, I recommend you spend $49 on a real programmer/debugger – the AVR Dragon. If your buying this for fun and to carry around for a little hardware development while waiting for your late flight. Then we;re back to…

    $19 bucks plus shipping from China or Hong Kong. Hmmm…

    Hasn’t someone already done this on a open-source single-sided PCB?

    – It is not expensive but also it isn’t dirt cheap as well. This things happen when you go for fulfillment manufacturing etc. You have to put some amount of margin to the price.

    – It is an OSHW project. Many people built one for themselves. You can check the forum subject. My favorite one is from Czech Republic: http://lukaso.iglu.cz/?page=attiny85-usb-board—-deska-kompatibilni-s-littlewire-a-usbtinyisp-avr-programatorem

    – If the price will be a problem, anyone can download the sources and build one for themselves. As i said above, design files are truly open.

    – Attiny85 in the kit ,of course, comes with the firmware.

    – Reset pin is re-purposed, yes. But there is an UART bootloader built-in to the firmware. Therefore you can change the device’s firmware even with an Arduino.

    – Of course this is not competing with AVR Dragon or something. Also, AVR programming is not only purpose/ability of this device.

    – Seeedstudio is well respected company. Dangerous Prototypes products are also being manufactured there and DP products are also shipping from China :)

      Excellent reply. I agree with your points 100%.

      I hope you will share with us the total cost/profit analysis for this Seeed fulfillment route you are taking, once some units actually ship from Seeed. That would be very interesting indeed.

      Once one of your devices go on sale, I’ll likely buy one or two from Seed, just to support your efforts.

      One more comment: A very similar realization of what you are doing has been going on for quite a while with the Softrock SDR radios. They utilize the ATtiny85 as a bridge to control the band-pass filters via GPIO and the Si570 programmable clock generator device over I2C as a local oscillator. I’ve been following this project for quite awhile, both online and in realized hardware that I have here.

      From my whiskey-soaked memory – I recall there were some issues about the type and voltage of the Zeners uses for level shifting on the USB side. You might want to check out the current design of the Softrock radios as well as the firmware from Fred PE0FKO in the Netherlands for the ATtiny45/85. There is a very active Yahoo Group for the “Softrock40″ Radios with the schematics. And if you Google “PE0FKO” you’ll find his “Firmware USB AVR Si570 controler” site.
