I was under the impression a proper USB charger needs to communicate with the USB host to ensure it will supply the full 500mA available from a USB 2.0 port. This MAX1555 part seem incapable of doing this – and off hand I don’t know of another that can.
The MAX1555 charges with just 100mA when USB-powered. When it is used with an external supply (which cannot be done with the circuit linked above) it charges with 280mA.

Real PCB’s on the way for that thought. Max1555 is too expensive and hard to get.
