Dangerous Prototypes: New look

in site by Ian | 3 comments

Over the last few days we’ve been experimenting with a new site theme. You may see it click on and off a few times before it’s completely ready.

We’ve been using a slightly modified Tarski theme since the beginning. The new look isn’t a drastic departure, but it does have some new stuff:

  1. A couple bold, direct links at the top to different parts of the site. This will be worked into updated forum and wiki themes too. Inspiration: SparkFun.
  2. A smaller header with less fluff before the content. A small logo box, and a new place for rotating new project announcements that link directly to the project how-to. Inspiration: SparkFun.
  3. Three column layout. New left-hand column links to projects and sales pages. Inspiration: SparkFun, Adafruit.
  4. Wider center column for bigger, clearer pictures. We want to stretch it to 600px if possible. Inspiration: Adafruit.

A bunch of little changes are still in progress. If you notice any bugs, annoyances, or just hate the new design, please hit us up in the comments below.

“Three column layout. New left-hand column links to projects and sales pages.”

I don’t see the left-hand column, only blank but the site is centered OK with the right-column.

I can’t click on an image and see a bigger view.

Why are there hanggers-on like WordPress.com and Quantserve.com (QuantServe tracking?)

I’m locked-down here, WinXP-Pro SP3+, latest Firefox 3.6.x (some plug-ins I use are not ready for later Firefox versions), latest JRE & Flash, and importantly – NoScript and Better Privicy Firefox plug-ins (granular scripting control and removal of LSO cookies in Firefox).

That said, I will bet when and if I see the left pane you mention on my browser, print preview and print will likely NOT work anymore. Go to Adafruit with my (typical) environment described above and give it a go – cannot print full Blog posts from my native machine (but I an scrape and save to PDF using Web apps, don’t want to get into that right now). Only the first or second page, then the last page appears in print preview. This problem is endemic in most Blog server apps, and has not been solved for a very long time.

Question to viewers of this post… How many of you have found many Blog sites to NOT print more than the first and last page in Firefox (and also in IE and Chrome etc?)

    Drone,

I don’t see a 3 column layout either. However: “You may see it click on and off a few times before it’s completely ready.”

I’m not sure what quantserve is. Maybe something from cloudflare. WordPress does our spam and provides some stats. We do embarrassingly little traffic analysis.

Had to take the theme offline. Lots of bugs in different browsers. I’ve avoided this for so long because I detest getting a site going right. Curse browsers period, but especially IE.
