Oscium iOS oscilloscope review

in oscilloscope by Ian | 6 comments

EDN reviewed the Oscium logic analyzer and oscilloscope for the iPhone/centiPad. It uses the Cypress PSoC 3, which is a CPU+FPGA hybrid. Cool tech, but too closed and pricey for us:

The $297.99 device comprehends one analog and four digital channels, touts 5 MHz analog bandwidth and 12 million sample/sec specifications

Warning – the EDN link spammed us before forwarding to the article. We thought the site was down because adblock left a blank page.

Definitely too pricey, and also too limited. 5 MHz bandwidth and 1+4 analog+digital? For not too much more than that you can get a low end Rigol scope. However, I have often thought that a cheap scope dongle paired with a smartphone or tablet would make a pretty awesome scope. I hope to see more of these.

A touch display is a good fit for an oscilloscope (or logic analyzer). I see that some of the really high end scopes have them now, but I’m not sure if they are using gestures (swipe, pinch etc) to pan, amplify the signal etc.

An Android frontend to some of the existing scopes might make for an interesting project.

Apple IPhone, an over-priced IPhone dongle-thing, and EDN spam. Those three things fit together perfectly.

Maybe do one of these (but do the dongle right), and target something like the cheap Archos Android devices. The Archos 7 is getting below $150 bucks these days – I’ve seen Chinese Android thingys for less than $100 too. Yeah, the touchscreens are resistive and they may only run Android 2.x, but that’s probably OK for a nice portable scope/analyzer front-end display & interface.

Remember, many of us with are heads NOT up our asses don’t own Apple products in the first place! I’m never going to let the Bastards vacuum $600++ out of my wallet and then tie me to a endless ball-and-chain data-capped service contract for anything even remotely like an IPhone.

I love android fanboys. Completely reasonable and not bigoted at all. Unlike the majority of the population that are just too dumb with their heads up their arses, handing over wads of cash to evil Apple for shiny useless objects.
