Bosch Sensortec BMP085 pressure sensor tests

in Chips, sensors by Ian | 2 comments

In a comment on our STMicroelectronics MEMS pressure sensor post, jbeale offers his tests of the Bosch Sensortec BMP085 pressure sensor:

The Bosch Sensortec BMP085 is slightly larger (5×5 mm) and has been out for some time. In its highest sensitivity mode it offers 0.01 hPa resolution and 0.03 hPa noise level. (Note: 1 millibar = 1 hPa). What really counts, though, is the accuracy and repeatability. In my comparison of two BMP085 devices, I found they differed by about 0.4 hPa up to 0.6 hPa in the same temperature & pressure environment, so the absolute accuracy of a given device would not be better than that. Wow! Someone actually read my comment! :-) I believe most / all of the silicon piezoresistive type pressure sensors have some medium to longer term drift that makes it difficult to achieve the claimed pressure (or equivalently, altitude) resolution in practice, as I show in that graph. This is in addition to the natural change in local barometric pressure due to weather. If anyone has a very stable (and yet, small and cheap) pressure sensor, let me know!

Hi. Did you try the MS5611 from meas-spec? The data-sheet claims 0.012 mbar accuracy with conversion time < 10 ms.

I already got a MS5607 and found it has a better measure stability than the BMP085, while claiming 0.024 mbar accuracy.
I will have a pair of M5611 by the end of the week, and start some testing on them.

      Regards,
      Nelson.
